Two Towers (TP23068 & TP23047)

Postby lonesome_cowboy_burt » Sun Sep 06, 2015 5:21 pm

I had a few minutes between buses in Maldon and so I went to have a look at TP23068 - St Peters Library Tower and TP23047 - Maldon Library Tower. A quick visit to the site and reading the information board (see either entry in T:UK for a photo), combined with the Grid Refs make me think that the two towers are really one. Looking at the OS data, I think that the Maldon Library Tower bolt was replaced by the St Peters Library Tower bolt. The tower wasn't open and my bus was due so I didn't gain access to the roof. Why do the OS use two names for the same tower? Earlier that morning I looked at Chelmsford County Hall (TP23079) where a disc replaced a bolt but the name was kept.

From the OSGB36 grid references, the two bolts were about 5 metres apart.

The OS record the Maldon bolt as 'Dest 12/83' whilst the St Peters
bolt was computed in 06/1981. So if the dates are reliable then the two
bolts coexisted for a couple of years and needed to be distinguishable.

Perhaps that would explain why they were given separate station names and
reference numbers.

Thanks ted - I guess that makes sense. I hadn't put the two dates together to see the overlap.
