Good old CJO (again). The log's long gone - took a bit of finding - left uncovered. A bike trip - at the extreme of my range. ps. The rest of my ride ended in a trigpointing disaster - I'd planned to ride onto Wolgarston, Acton Trussell and Dark Side Wood. I rode past Wolgarston without realising and went onto Acton Trussell - no sign of the ROW through the (posh) houses to the east so I had a look at the ROW to the north - again no sign of it up the driveway to the converted farm - I thought about the gateway but there were people working at the farm and bulls in the field - reluctantly I gave up. So I retraced my steps back to Wolgarston - lots of traffic on the busy road, again people working at the farm and an electric fence to negotiate - another failure. With this I headed for home - the only consolation was a pint and a plate of noodles in The Plaza Rugeley. I'd done more than 60 miles - my longest bike ride in 60 years.

I asked if I could enter the compound and inspect the pillar - "sorry sir it's a restricted area" - but I only want to take a photo - "more than my job's worth sir" - oh go on you can hold my hand! - "sorry sir but if you give me your camera I'll unlock and take a photo for you" - ok then. I agreed with him and said that I'd just visited Fingay Hill where the pillar had been moved to the nearby hedgerow. After a long chat we agreed that it would be best to relocate the pillar behind the nearby mast. Anyone wanting to visit could then walk up the track without damaging the crops and using machinery in the field would be much easier. He was very interested in preserving local heritage and I'm sure the pillar will be sympathetically moved possibly after the field is harvested. Looking back I think it would have been easier up the hedge line – the field only had stubble and was out of view of the farm and the troublesome lady – and it’s much shorter. This is my second attempt at this one. Parked in Skirlington car boot market and headed for the verge carrying the trigpointing spade. This must be the biggest car boot in the country and the road had a stationary line of traffic queuing to enter the site so my digging caused some amusement – a chap in a pickup truck shouted some comment about not finding anything there – I said I was after worms – he was the quite helpful suggesting I tried further along the road where there was some damp ground. I did find worms but no sign of the surface block even though I had copies of the photos from the logs with me. The verge seems to have been disturbed with what appears to be loose tarmac below turf. Good luck if you try to find it – you may need measurement from the sketch map.

Most of the paths were water logged and I nearly lost my wellies. The trigpoint is in the same field as the path with no wire to negotiate. Just for fun I decided to continue on the path to find out where it came out. There are fantastic views over Hartshorne south Derbyshire and towards Derby.
