Easy walk up from the high point of the road. Had tried to find this one a year ago. Failed. This time I packed the rucksack with a good dollop of determination and set off. 2 hours later and bingo. 1/4" rod set in its pad of concrete. It was protected by a layer of flat stones and turf which made detection very difficult. With CJ.

Parked at the east end of St Mary's Loch and made my way across the rough hillside onto the summit of White Law. Marked cairn exists but not quite in the location shown. Found the 1/4" rod in its concrete pad after about 15mins, which is quite quick for a rod. It is situated under a flat rock on top of a low cairn which is about 11m west of the marked cairn.

Dry day, blowing a hoolie and misty on top. Sheltered in the lee of the large cairn to consult the GPS. Grass and stone top, so no heather. After about 30mins of stabbing, located the slab and then the bolt. 1/4" rod type. Position is approx 3.5m north of the cairn. With CJ.

Walked up from Old Caberston via the marked track which, in places, doesn't exist. Mast shown on map is absent as well. Bright frosty day encouraged me to spend a bit of time on this. Summit is very stoney but, after 45mins, stabbed what felt like a concrete slab. A bit of digging revealed a foot square slab with a 1/4" rod type bolt. Position is midway between the summit cairn and a low pile of stones situated due south of the cairn. (Ignore the small cairn to the SSE).

Parked at spot height 331, Cotter Hill, (25,000 map) and followed the mapped track on to the summit of Coiliochbhar Hill, which is a Marilyn. On the way back, cut along the obvious fence line which took us into a forest break and on to the trig. Although becoming a bit enclosed with trees now, it's in good condition with no view to speak of. Returned via a new track from a recently installed wind turbine which comes up from Upper Minmore. Parked at the visitor centre and set off up the hill on good paths. Although we started in a drizzle, it was throwing it down by the time we reached the summit. We huddled in the shelter of the monument to fire up the app on the phone before stepping back out into the teeth of the deluge. After checking the obvious outcrops of rock, we concentrated on the grassed area to the south of the obelisk. Just as my trousers started feeding water into my boots, bingo. The original sketch and photograph is now available, so armed with this, set out to find the rascal. Parked in the nearby layby to the west. Previous entries have not exaggerated the dangers of this location. It's horrible. Comparing the original photograph with the actual location, it seems the verge has been built up by about 6" with rocky infill in the intervening years. Although the sketch is useful, the relevant distances are represented by letters and the conversion table has not been included. I had a stab about but due to the precarious position, gave up quite quickly. I'm sure the surface block is there, but I'll not be going back.

Went back to car and had lunch. Looked at previous photos again and spotted that in CJO's photo there was a distinct pattern of trees on the horizon. I took a screen shot and zoomed in which showed an electricity pylon almost in line with the trees and the Berntsen. It was back along the road verge till I lined them all up. As I already knew it was 55" in from the verge, thanks to jonglew, a couple of stabs and bingo. There it was. With CJ.

GPS put the location of the bolt possibly on the flat roof of the ancient castle that supports the lighthouse. Access is only by joining an official guided tour so that's what I did. Tour itself is very interesting and informative. Mentioned my bolt interest to the guide who was very helpful. GPS placed the bolt in the south corner of the roof. This has a new looking layer of lead topped by wood decking and I suspect the bolt may be under all that. I certainly couldn't find it. Enjoyed my visit though.

Headed for the given map reference apnd started looking and probing. The low headland is covered in peat bog with nasty drops down cliffs. Despite having four searchers and spending a good couple of hours, we found nothing. It was however in the most spectacular spot and we enjoyed our picnic lunch gazing out to the surrounding sea and islands.

Parked in Melrose and took the chain bridge over the Tweed to Gattonside. Thereafter followed the signposted path diagonally up the hillside until it flattened off. Just through the belt of trees was a walkers gate on the right giving access to the field. As this was snow covered stubble, the trig was easily reached. Splendid views all round although bitingly cold. With CJ.

Parked in Golspie and followed the sign posted path up Ben Bhraggie. This is a steep ascent which landed us beside "The Mannie", in about 45 mins. Fantastic uninterrupted views all round. The marked trail at the back was followed until a convenient bend was reached and then it was a wet slog across boggy ground interspersed with snow patches until the pillar was reached. Like a lot of Ross-shire trigs, this one had no flush bracket. Original plug with raised letters. Good views and well worth the effort despite the floundery snow. Returned by the same route. Had high hopes of finding this one. Parked in the small forestry car park at Savery and walked along the road. Not a single car passed. Went through a metal gate opposite Fiunary Farm and wandered down to the shore in a bitingly cold wind. The rocks here are basalt and outcrop in small lumps and bumps. As usual, the GPS pointed to a small jumble of stones which resembled a collapsed cairn. Started digging and probing but after half and hour, gave up. It was getting dark and cold. With more time and patience, I reckon it's there. With CJW.

Tried this one in Spring but couldn't find a convenient route to it due to a house being in the way, so gave up. This time I spotted a path which goes to the right of the shop and up passed the small petrol pumps. Near the top of the path, look for a small style on the left which gives access to some rough pasture. Follow this over the moor towards a telephone pole which overlooks the Sound of Mull. Near this pole, look for a rotten strainer post with a rusty metal fence post attached to it. The bolt is on a flat rock approx 2.5m from this post, near a whin bush. The bolt itself is 1" with some damage in the form of deep grooves cut in it.

Parked in the small RSPB car park just beyond Glenborrowdale. Followed the delightful little path which starts just to the left of the car park. It wound up a narrow glen through the temperate rain forest. High on the right, the summit, where the bolt should be, came into view. It was very rocky and steep so I continued up the glen until the hillside grew less steep and plunged through the bog and battled up through the bracken/birch/scrub. I then headed back along the ridge and arrived on the summit. What a spot. GPS said the bolt was exactly under a pile of stones so I started looking but eventually gave up. It's possible there. Just needs more digging.

Followed the directions given by KevP. Parked in the car park at Glenancross which is there for access to the beach. Ignore the beach signs, but walk back out of the car park onto the minor road. Turn left uphill (north). As the road goes over the top and downhill, there is a fancy house on the right. As the road swings sharp right, there is a wooden kissing gate on the left. Go through this and follow the path, keeping the fence on the left. Although a direct assault could be made straight up the steep slope on the right, there is an easier way if you stick to the path as it contours round the hill. Soon you come to an open little gully which gives an easier ascent up the right hand side. Another little pull and you're there. Great views all round although the weather today was decidedly lacklustre. With CJW.

The fence was easily crossed beside the toilets and a short walk landed me on top. Very wet hillside just above the Dundonnell road. GPS took me to a flat slab of rock surrounded by peat/heather not far below a newish electricity pole. The whole place was swimming with water. A visual search revealed nothing. There was an obvious grove in the rock covered in mud and although I didn't fancy it, I plunged my fingers in and very quickly touched the bolt. A bit of drainage work had it exposed in no time. Usual brass bolt with a dimple. Nice views over Little Loch Broom. With CJ.

Thanks to the photos of Peregrinus, the little circle of stones was indentified, but I couldn't find the bolt. The depressiion was filled with muddy water. A guddle around with my fingers located it in a shallow groove. Although I took photos, the bolt couldn't be seen because of the constant seepage of water.

Decided to do something different, so took the Cromarty Ferry across to Nigg and climded the obvious road before cutting off right and exploring the substantial gun emplacements. We regained the track to the east of Castlecraig Farm and followed it through fields NE to the block of forestry. This had recently been clear felled and led to the small loch marked on the map to the south of the trig. This loch turned out to be a marshy bog which we circumvented to the east but in the process, had to battle through thick brush and barbed wire fences. Eventually we reached the trig which occupies a good position with a good view all round. It retains the centre plug which has raised lettering. We returned via the nearby Marilyn. With Nozzer.

Parked at the pier at the end of the public road at Drimnin and followed the well marked landrover track towards Dorlinn. Strangely, there are mile posts every mile which may indicate this was an important route at one time. The grid reference led to an obvious bump along the escarpment which was duely reached. Here there was a small green mound made up of some rubble, which looked like the remains of a trig point. As the grid reference for the old trig and the block were the same, I can only presume the block is under this rubble. I didn't bother digging. The views were breathtaking and extensive and well worth the effort, so hence the score. Not bad for a non existant trig!

First of all, read Clochandigher's excellent description of the minor road used to gain access to the area. Be warned, it's even worse now, if that's possible. Spent a bit of time exploring various ascent options but due to the river and steep bits of rock, decided on the approach via the track and bridge. Parked at Balchraggan and spoke to a nice old gentleman who invited us in for a cup of tea before we started. He also had an eight year old tup who thought it was a dog. But I digress. We declined the tea but listened to his suggestions of a possible route. We followed the forestry road heading south and crossed the marked bridge. Shortly thereafter, we turned right across the open field, just passed the wooden house, and entered the wood. We followed an old overgrown track through the trees for a while but when it turned downhill, we decided to head up the ridge on the left. There followed an adventurous route up through a mixture of birch, heather, rocky bluffs and dead bracken. Distance wise it wasn't too far but it seemed to take ages. Deer tracks are OK but they don't always lead to the summit. Eventually we crested the final rise and there it was. And what a view. All the way up Loch Ness and all the way down. Well worth the effort. To descend we cut straight down east heading for the gothic castle at Dirichurachan. We had to bash through some dense forest but eventually popped out on to the marked track. Easy walk back to the car. After refusing another cup of tea, we set off back along the so called public road and reached flat tarmac in no time at all. With Nozzer.

Parked near the telephone exchange at the top of the Kingairloch Estate access road. Cut round below the larger of the two hillocks and progressed onto the summit of the smaller one. GPS put this just on top of a rocky knoll overlooking the firth. There is some rock debris on top of the little rise which probably came from road building. I don't think it's very deep and the bolt may be tantalisingly just below this layer. Nice spot.

This one wasn't easy. It's located somewhere in the middle of a large expanse of grass with no distinguishing features. The advice to line up the far end of the house roof with the left hand pillar of the bridge is good and gives an accurate bearing on which the Berntsen must lie. The difficulty is in determining how far along this line it is. I used the amount of window showing on previous photographs as a guide but of course that depends on the height above the ground that the photo was taken. Fifeteen minutes of stabbing and I struck gold. Only an inch below the surface and in good condition.

What a debacle. Decided to approach from Broughton in Furnace using public footpaths shown on the map. All was going well as we crossed the golf course near Eccle Riggs but as we started crossing the low field, we discovered it was swimming in water. After I went up to my ankle in the mud for the third time, we gave up on that route. After a consolation ice cream I headed back to the main A595 to try again. Immeditely south of the trig a public footpath sets of from a convienient mini layby. It quickly joins a cement track, goes through someone's garden (a bit disconcerting) and deposits you just below the trig. Simples.

Parked at the sub station at the start of the road up to Fisherton. Followed a good dog walkers path up through the bit of forest, turned east at the top and made my way to the half domed structure. It's slowly reverting to nature and now has a good covering of moss. Big main bolt on top with the two pairs of small bolts at each end.

Thrashed my way in to the whin covered mount where the GPS said the bolt should be. Lots of thick vegetation meant I had no chance. I managed to find a report on the archeological investigation of the site in 1973 which mentions the site has been "mutilated" by a concrete water tank. I suspect the bolt to be on this tank but it is now well buried.

Parked in a convenient lay-by and scambled down easy banking through the hazel bushes. GPS seemed to indicate FBM just offshore under the water or it could indeed be under the new road. As the water of level of Loch Shin does fluctuate, it might be worth returning to check out the offshore reading when the water level is lower.

Parked in the car park at the bottom of the hill and wandered up the road and over the old railway in lovely spring weather. The 1:25000 map (but not the 1:50000) showed a track to the south of the trig and it seemed to offer closer access, so that's where I headed. What little of it that remains is totally choked with fallen trees. On to Plan B. After battling my way in from the usual track, I found it guarded by a squadron of collapsed trees. Spotted a geocache at the trigs base. With CJ who definitely had a moan!

Hadn't intended doing any trigging today so had no tools with me. However CJ found an old knife and fork in the car we had used on a picnic and so armed with iainmac's images, we began probing for this one. A nice lady from a nearby farm stopped and gave me directions to a nearby cache and I didn't have the heart to tell her that I was looking for something else! After half an hour the fork struck an object which gave that familiar hollow clunk and there it was, 3" down.
