Followed the track up to the little quarry and then a short hop to the rather squat pillar at the top. The views make you feel like you are on the roof of England but Tan Hill pub @ 1732 ft above sea level and a warm fire are only a few minutes away. Works for me.

An iconic building,beautiful inside and out. I remember the copper roof as a very distinctive green ,when I worked near Settle in the early 80s. So distinctive that the Luftwaffe allegedly used it as a point of navigation on their way to bomb Liverpool. Also in WW2 my father in law went to school here, so it was an important building for him.

Walked straight up from the Old Road/Cycleway 68 towards the mast. Enjoyed the view eastwards from the pillar that only appeared in the last few yards. Is the barn adjacent to the mast an original or built to service the mast? My RAC atlas showed the road going through towards Buxton, so a bit miffed to find a White Hall education thing in the way forcing a long retreat.

Bagged the top before having a comprehensive tour of the buiding.Everything from a tour of the crypt (Nelson seemed to be buried directly below the domes centre) to the 528 step climb to the top viewing plartform.The previous St Pauls was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. I was told the old spire was a full Nelson's Column higher than the present height.

I was determined to bag at least one pillar on our short break in London, So having taken the tube to Walthamstow Central and installed my wife in some designer gallery, I set off to find the gap in the fence described by Dot924. Couldn't find any gaps but a) the local kids must have balanced on traffic cones either side of a low point of the very sharp perimeter fence, which I couldn't bring myself to replicate.b) was to climb a tree that had grown up near the fence and climb down the other side to reach the very near trig. I made it about 9 feet up the tree but lost my nerve. The news headline of "57 year old man impaled on railings trying to break into reservoir." were just to scary to contemplate."Man gets a rollicking from his wife for getting stuck in reservoir" seemed bad enough. So I admitted defeat and settled for a visual bag with all my important bits still intact

Persuaded my wife to let me have a 10 minute diversion off the M1, but I was flying blind. All I remembered was that the trig was just above the church.Things didn't go well as I aimed for the radio mast and ended up at a dead end. Running out of time I made the mistake of asking the grumpiest man in the village for directions and did well not to get hit. At the last minute found a helpful couple who pointed me up Mill Hill Lane. A quick jog got the job done, but on the hottest day ever in the UK, that was no mean feat

The good people of Rutland don't seem too proud of the highest pinnacle of their county. Someone has knocked a fairly stout post in front of the pillar, presumably to do with the cross country horse jumping course the field seems to be part of. A nod to Jonny Muir who has inspired me to ascend all the old county tops without the hard work of cycling between them

Loved the location.Pillar is set on a funny looking mound above a 15th century farmhouse with a great outlook to the sea or the fells. Walked up the farm drive as they were cutting grass for their 1st cut of silage. Asked permission at the farmhouse which was readily given with a smile. After years of driving past and wondering why have a lighthouse here, I finally made a point of visiting it on a sunny Sunday summer afternoon and climbed the very narrow stairs that wind their way to the top.Brilliant! The lighthouse never had a working light but original plans had accommodation for a keeper. The whole thing was just an sea themed memorial to a local lad who made good at the Admiralty and made sure Nelson had enough ships to pull off a win at Trafalgar.

Parked by the mast and made a beeline for the pillar on top of some of the highest cliffs in England. We then walked a few more yards to look over the cliff edge for wonderful views. We were aware of someone nearby messing around with a stick sort of thing; when he suddenly took aim with an unmistakable rifle with a silencer attached. Not taking any chances, I legged it, but got in trouble from my wife for reaching the other side of a dry stone wall before she did. Never did find out what it was all about.

Hadn't done my homework on this one properly, so didn't realise the pillar was in the woods.Aimed for the mast (lower ground) and then up through the woods to higher ground. With several upright boulders amongst the trees I actually walked past the pillar. Now I can say it's 80 yds west of the 2nd new gate and 10yds into the wood.

Approached from the north. Crossed Keldhead Sike over a jumble of sleepers, tiptoed through some very wet rushy ground and then up a bank through gorse bushes. At that point I was surrounded by 9 overly friendly (or hungry?) fell ponies who pursued me to the top of the field. From there it was a quick hop over a fence to the pillar. I worked on the nearby farm (Mearbeck) in 1980 and thought I could walk straight to the pillar on my first revisit since then. Turned out it wasn't on the nice heather moorland as I pictured it to be, but on the grassy hill to the south west. Back in 1980 we came up here to help fireman put out a moorland fire in the middle of a very dry spell, similar to summer 2018. Walked up from the end of MItchell Lane

The daddy of follies known locally as the Taj Mahal of the North. As a proud Lancastrian, I love the fact it can be seen from the M6. It has be used for backdrops for the annual theater in the park and gives stunning views from it's balconies when open. I can also remember visiting here in the late 70s when it looked in a sorry graffiti ridden state. Well done to those who restored it.

Did this walk with my friend George. who used to be a vet in these parts some 40 years ago; so there was plenty of Herriot style stories as we left Ribblehead on the 3 Peaks route. Branched off half right towards the tunnel spoil heaps and stood next to an air shaft as a train passed underneath. Found the pillar OK but on a gloomy day I couldn't get a repeat of srichy20's superb photo of the viaduct below Ingleborough's profile. Headed down east across wet ground to the Ribble Way and finished off with a visit to Thorns Gill.George fell waist deep into a bog and then left his rucksack by the car as we drove off. Local knowledge isn't everything.

Unremarkable viewpoint in an unremarkable field. Not even the highest point in the field. At least it was dry underfoot. The only point of interest were the trees around the field were alternatively oak and ash, so it would be a good place for long range forecasting in spring. Refering to leaf emergence- oak before ash,splash; ash before oak, soak. That's how exciting bagging this trig was.

What a wonderful mountain. Its' easy access on a nice wide path and amazing views make this such a popular walk. Hundreds of people of all shapes and sizes were making their way up on a lovely summer evening. The reward at the top is a dry grassy bed and a view of 17 counties (apparently) Great to see so many getting outdoor exercise and heading straight to the trig point for an endearing touch.

Parked at Yockenthwaite and followed the Dales Way to Beckermonds. From there made the slog up the fell with my own biblical swarm of flies following me all the way to the ridge top wall.White pillar stood out well on the skyline. Dramatic low cloud and gloom to the west; sunny views to the east. The walk back down from Horse Head Gate to Yockenthwaite on the Pennine Journey route was the highlight of the day.

Parked by HIghstock Bridge and walked acoss a flat field to the wooden fence/gap inthe perimeter fence. From there on it was a desperate struggle through the high bracken and over fallen trees. The first top ridge isn't the top, so keep heading east for a second ridge. Finding this trig in the summer foilage is akin to a good game of hide and seek. PS ! The day after I found 3 ticks on the underside of my upper arms ,presumably due to parting the bracken. Deer ticks I imagine.

Parked on Mewith Lane and walked past West Borronhead. From there on it was just a case of following Alder Gill Syke and keeping the fence on your left for a steady climb. Just exploring Tor Dyke prior to ascending Great Whernside when some nasty low cloud turned up and parked itself around the 2000 feet contour. So a quick change of plan brought me here, below the cloud and a very pleasent walk up from Kettlewell, especially through the woods. Followed same route as jamiekeighley (3/2/18) , but this was a summer evening walk with lovely silhouette views of the Lakeland hills and interesting flora all around, so a lot more going for it.The pillar sits on top of a pleasing little mound surrounded by exposed limestone and associated scrub. Came up past Parsonage Farm through a few gates and arrived at the top for sunset.No chance of erosion around the base or being reduced to a cattle rubbing post for this pillar, thanks to lots of TLC from the parish council. To celebrate a good view and a pleasant summer evening we had a singsong at the top which attracted the whole of the suckler herd. All the calves were at the front, mothers behind,which made for a memorable concert picture

I like Humphrey Head; this was my 4th visit. The last 2 occasions have been as finishing points for Cross Bay Walks from Hest Bank. The spur of limesone cliff juts out like an out stretched arm to help lift you out of the silty sticky sands. Today we scambled straight up from the car parking spot. Not much view today, but not much wind either, which must be a rarity looking at nearby windswept bushes.On a previous visit I saw a plaque on the cliff directly below the trig which read, " Beware these rocks as you ascend, here William Pedder met his end."

Took a moment to remember the victims of the 1958 plane crash that occured within a few hundred yards of here. Weather conditions were so bad at the time, that the engineers working up here were unaware of the incident.My Dads mate was a raw police recruit who helped with the rescue and recovery and found it very traumatic.

A lovely spot in an unfrequented corner of the Lake District. Did this walk with my friend Jeremy, who used to work at Brunt Knott Farm 40 years ago. He had lots of stories of digging sheep out of snow drifts and tractors sliding down hillsides in pre quad days. There were really good views of the heads of the Kentmere and Longsleddale valleys. The pillar itself is sat on a pleasing plinth of Silurian rock.

Parked on Delph Lane and walked up the side of Fell Plantation for what should have been a simple evening sortie on the Bleasdale shooting estate. My Bowland expert, Ian, thought the ground around the pillar had shrunk/sunk in recent years. Then he suggested dropping down to Arbour, which is one of the loveliest spots in the whole Forest of Bowland; delightful. Then he suggested looking for the remains of a plane crash on Stake House Fell (1949 C-54 Skymaster), . Eventually found on a ledge of the hillside. Dropped back down the River Calder and followed the fell wall back towards Stang Yule.. Then we ran out of daylight and finished the walk fighting the rushes , heather, bracken and unseen bogs in the dark. All good fun.

My Fathers Day treat to go out with 80% of family +dog up Warton Crag- an all time favourite. If the pillar's location matched the airiness and elevated views of Morecambe Bay that you get from The Perched Blocks it would be a 10 from me. Warton Crag has a myriad of paths through the undergrowth and along the limestone terraces; a wonderful place. But in the height of summer's greenery the pillar is boxed in and an anti climax. So it's back to The Perched Blocks with a bar of Bourneville, and warm sunshine.Happy days!

Came up from Lower Gorple Resr along the Pennine Way, expecting to find a southward path, but never did.Set off through the heather and eventually made it. Best bit- being circled by lots of anxious curlews at close quarters. Worst bit- no valleys in view, otherwise 360 degrees of moorland. Enjoyed continuing the walk over to Colden.

My mum thought I was very thoughtful offering to take her to see her bridesmaid of 58 years ago as part of her Mother's Day ride out. It just so happens there is a trig point on the highest point of her farm. Result- I get the brownie points and a stunning panorama. A visit to Burrow Heights with my 85 year old mum was a reenactment of my first trig bag aged about 7. Back then she brought me here to show me the' meteorite ' a short distance NW from the pillar. Years later I learnt it was an erratic boulder of the Silurian Age probably originated from the south Lake District.But that doesn't sound as interesting and seeing how it was Mother's Day weekend, meteorite it still was. From this viewpoint we looked onto her birthplace -Bailrigg Farm-and tried to imagine what this area will look like as a Garden Village new town if the plans go ahead. Visit while you can;soon it will be a great big building site.

Reached the top of this little hill at the end of a fascinating walk around Lancaster's historical quay area with my good friend Mark. Highlights included the Millennium Bridge,the Maritime Museum, the Roman Baths and the River Lune itself with a very high spring tide. From the pillar of Brookholme I could look down on the fields at Marsh Point that our family farmed for 4 generations This land was severely flooded in 1927 when my grand father rescued stranded TB patients at the Sanatorium and 1977 when i was sent out to reach a drowning cow attached to a washing line at 2am in the morning. That's a lot of memories for a 33m high trig

Hadn't read the advice, so took the footpath, ditch, barbed wire route which wasn't that bad. Pillar stood above some fairly wet pasture. Views nothing special but the main point of interest was on top of the pillar.There were the remains of a moorhen (legs & feet plus a few bloodied bones) ,which I took to be the left overs of a bird of prey's table. Opportunist use of trig point.

A hundred or so years ago my grandfather worked on this land -West View- then owned by his uncle. My gran was working in service in the farmhouse and there they met. I would like to think they walked up to this highest spot of the farm to see the view of Quernmore valley and the recently built Ashton Memorial. The pillar wouldn't appear for 30 years,but I like to think it's part of my family heritage. Too hazy today for good west views.

Found this leaning trig in the corner of a squelchy field. Disappointed there was no real evidence of a historical thoroughfare,but even the Romans would have struggled to get past the junk surrounding Stubbins Head Farm as we headed south along it.

Walked out in the dark to see the lighthouse working at close quarters.Combined with the nearby iconic Midland Hotel, Morecambe looked a nice place to visit! My wife remembered visiting a small zoo next to the lighthouse in the early 70s that had a bear housed in a tiny cage. Times have changed.

An epic walk out to this lighthouse in a 40mph southerly wind. Set off from the car park, along the beach,then had to give the wife a piggy back through knee deep water to reach the island. Very atmospheric with the ruined church and the waves roaring in. Lighthouse is in good condition and I got maximum brownie points as it was our anniversary and the church is dedicated to the Welsh version of St Valentine.

What I fell in love with that day set me on a course of a lifetime of hill walking and.poring over maps to explore hidden corners and remote peaks all over the globe.So thanks Nickey Nook for being my 'Orrest Head' (acknowledgements to Wainwriight) . A walk with my mate Matt up Lancaster's favourite fell although it was too overcast today to see much. HIgh score given in grateful thanks for 40 years of service. From teenage rambles to girlfriend walks out, from back pack adventures with the kids to fighting middle age spread runs; this trig point has been the day's objective and seen it all. Goodness knows what sort of mess someones made on top of the pillar, but it's not pretty A honourable mention to friend Mike Dagger who has clocked up 1630 visits here

Another consolation trig walk. In Ulverston area to walk out to Chapel Island in the estuary, but the walk was cancelled due to recent heavy rainfall scouring out the channels. Our boat trip round the Bass Rock was cancelled,something about a bit of wind; so did the next best thing, which was to climb it's sister volcanic plug. From replica whale jawbones to a very good view finder; a ruined stone hut and wartime lookout post - there is something for everyone. Plus a good view of the Firth of Forth islands and a pristine white trig living for the moment

Finally got round to walking up Pillar from Buttermere with my mate Skez. A classic walk up to Scarth Gap, down to the Memorial Bridge over the River Lisa and then up through the trees to Pillar Cove for intimate views of Pillar Rock. From there we used Shamrock Traverse to reach the summit with glorious views north and west and nothing but cloud south and east. Returned via Looking Stead and Black Sail Pass to drop back into Ennerdale before climbing back over Scarth Gap again. Just under 7 hours. Pillar trig looked a bit battered.

Fore warned by those who had gone before ,I was kitted out in wellies and brier proof attire. Walked in from Skitham Lane but the footpath accessories (bridge and stiles) were next to useless. Had to jump a water filled ditch that a 3 day event horse would have been proud of. All to reach the middle of a grassy field that I couldn't think of one good reason to erect a pillar in. Walked past a disinterested Shorthorn bull and his harem . to reach the top for good views of the Ribble Valley. Hadn't realised there was a Cold War bunker by the trig point; it doesn't seem very secret. Were they ever manned?

Previously visited in the 80s when I worked at Catshaw Farm, gathering the fell sheep.It still had a decent amount of peat around it then. Sad to see it now on its side, with its amazing depth of foundation exposed and unable to save the pillar from the rigours of erosion.Followed the boundary fence eastwards for a couple of miles to the top ,then down via Catshaw Greave

My wife, Valerie, used to come up here in the early Eighties when she was at Huddersfield Poly as it was then. At that time there was a pub up here which apparently was very popular with students. Lots of history attached to this place , from being an Iron age fort to its Victorian monument. I loved the fact that a brass band played at the top of the tower on its opening day, but because it was very windy, no one could hear them.

Up and down via the Miners Track to complete our 5 mountain challenge of the British Isles. Pouring rain from first to last step with high wind and poor visibility.Peered hopefully into the summit cafe for signs of life and a warming drink but there was nothing doing. As another sopping wet walker put it "I'm not getting the love."

Joined the multitudes up into the cloud, At the top it was like a League of Nations get together .fighting for their 30 seconds with the trig; thankfully walking isn't always like this More memorable was afterwards joining in a Highlands Games next to the Jacobite Memorial

On my 3rd Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk The first two, donkeys years ago, invovled struggling straight up from Winterscales- a tedious unremitting climb. So much better the newer route over the aquaduct and via Greensett. At the pillar there was a moving tribute to 5 Yorkshire soldiers recently killed in Afganistan.

Low cloud on top but just below the plateau existed a lovely sunny day with cracking views.On my 3rd Yorkshire 3 peaks and also visited by way of the Pennine Way. The top may be a bit bland but how many other high summits have a starring role in two epic walks

Totally enjoyed my trip up majestic Snowdon via the Miners' Track and not wanting the walk to end, thought that Garnedd Ugain would be an easy diversion. And so it was. At that point I gave into temptation to carry on along the ridge to Crib Goch. Ignorance is bliss, but there was a party of teenagers set to do it as well; so hard could it be. Crig Goch as it turned out is an amazing scramble on a knife edge of a ridge. There was little wind,no frost, perfect visibility, a great place for an adventure! That said, we did pass a group where one of the party was cragfast. He was shouting "What the ***** have you brought me here for?" and I didn't envy the leader sorting that one out. High score then for a memorable day.

Ever since we have been making an annual visit to see friends near Todmorden, Stoodley Pike has grabbed attention. It dominates the Calderdale skyline. On this occassion we visited the 120 ft high monument on a Pennine Way walk from The White House on the A58. Built to commemorate seeing off Napoleon- a year before Waterloo! Ascended the stairs in the pitch dark to reach the viewing balcony.
