I left the car by the A897 and went through the gate by Lochan Dubh (as Perigrinus) with a clear sky and a growing brightness over the Knockfin Ridge as sunrise approached. Standing by Lochan Dubh listening to the songbirds in the nearby copse of trees and the very gentle whisper of the water my eye was drawn to a large bird approaching. A white-tailed eagle slowly flew by silhouetted against the dawn sky. It made an unforgettable sight. Then a fish splashed in the loch, the sun rose clear over the Knockfin Ridge and I got underway. I headed across ground that was sometimes very squelchy and at other times firm and dry aiming for the nearest of the deep cleaves in the ridge. It was a fine wee gorge with waterfall and views towards the high ground beyond Loch an Ruathair which was glowing in the sun. Reaching the Knockfin Plateau the peat hags and small lochans characterise a landscape that is very special indeed. It was a zig zag course between the pools that were quite empty for the time of year. I found that far from being in fear of the terrain I was enjoying it! The haunting cries of the golden plovers, the solitude and the vast open vista I will never forget. The pillar sits by a deep hag and is in vgc. All fixings are in place.
