Trig on small hillock just outside MOD compound. FB in place but no cap. Pillar structure sound. This one reminded me of Knighton Down which I visited around this time last year..

Bolt in good condition and found as Peregrinus describes. Had time to sit for 15 mins on the peaceful shingle beach nearby before work.

Parked at comms mast and followed the track onwards out across the moorland. Eventually this peters out then it was a straight hike to the trig avoiding boggy parts where possible. Pillar is in excellent condtion with FB and asphalt plug. Gorgeous views in every direction. Bagged the Yeaman (Cnoc Mor) on the way back.

From Ribigill. Track and path quite a way in then up the steep slope east of Sgor Chaonasaid. Soon after gaining the broad ridge the cloud came down thick. Navigated to summit tor using compass and eventually found wee path up to summit. No views but stone built pillar in good order with FB and composite plug. Got the hell out of there and as I approached S Chaonasaid the weather cleared. Bagged that fine peak and viewpoint then back to trig for the clear views. Same way back encountering WW2 plane wreckage on the way.

My 150th pillar. Hill of the Wangie - what a splendid name! Up zig zag forest track then picked up mountain bike trail to 'launch pad'. From here it is a hundred yards or so over felled forest to the pillar. FB in place, no cap. Pillar sound with trace of white paint. Views better with surrounding trees gone but still not expansive. Hot day with foxgloves and heather in bloom. Took mountain bike trail down as a short-cut.

Similar route to BigJ. I'd been thinking for a while this one would be a bit trespassy but had no problem. Up farm track, over gate in to sparse copse then over fence in to field with pillar. No horses just long grass. The electric fence doesn't seem to run right along. Pillar in good condition with FB and cap (raised lettering). Better views from the walk than the top.

Ladies, don't do this one in your best nylons! Parked at forest track entrance. Up along mapped tracks to the two comms masts. Behind here runs a rough vehicle track upon which you might spot a wee cairn. (At this point I got my heavy boiler suit on.) Head in to the jungle here and there is a it of a route to the wee clearing in which the pillar sits. The highest point of the Black Isle! FB in place but cap gone. Pillar in good condition with trace of white paint. No views from the summit but a good walk up.

Parking layby to NE A836. Up the heathery slope on a wet and windy morning afore-work ramble. Spent 5 minutes looking in the wrong area before carefully looking at the landscape in Mr Woodall's photograph. This helped me find the correct area and the bolt was soon spotted. Condition unchanged, open views. I got back to the car just as a squall drove in off the sea.

Similar approach to that eminent trigger who visited afore me! At this time of year the bracken is chest-high but I found a deer track that eased the journey. Upon gaining higher ground the vegetation becomes more heather-pasture though boggy in parts. Beeline to the pillar with a fence to climb. Deer and ponies kept close eye on me whilst many magpie moths were drying their wings in the early air. Silence! That deep flow country silence. The peat seems to suck the sound from the world other than the whisper of the wind. Pillar in excellent condition, with only a little exposure to the base. Fantastic panaromic views including Scarabens, Morven, Ben Griams, Ben Klibreck, Ben Loyal, Ben get the idea! Tried a more direct descent to the road which was successful though a lot steeper.

Parked in wide forestry track entrance opposite the road in to Woodland Cottage. Followed this road (Woodland Cottage)then along track, forest road,track to the prominent mound upon which the pillar sits. The last section of track was a definite welly boots task! Steep, slippy final ascent and thankfully I didn't need the saw I took along as the path through the blackthorn is still clear. Spider gone, FB clinging on. Otherwise pillar is o.k. Decent views. Most enjoyable wee ramble this with lots of frogs spawning and plenty bird life including a pair of Mistle thrush.

Summit mobbed - not my usual trigpointing experience! Credit to those doing it in high-heeled boots though. I walked up from the FBM over Whinny Hill, a route I had to myself until I joined the main tourist route which had hundreds on it. Got to touch the trig as a European gentleman roared at the top of voice beside it whilst his partner filmed him....I must do that next one I bag! Condition unchanged since recent visitors logs.

Good views including the shining Solway Firth. A car did stop me on the way back down but it was just a foreign tourist trying to find Dino Park!

Returned same way before going to work.

From parking area on A836. Followed W side of deer fence before climbing it where it bends slightly. Straight line to hill summit, 10 - 15 minute search for the bolt which is in the condition previously reported. No trees to worry about, going quite good with some squelchy parts. A bright rainbow was a near constant presence on this fine lunchtime ramble. Good views W along the north coast.

I parked up at the entrance of the forestry track opposite Winewells and after a hundred yards or so took the mountain bike trail off to the left. This made for a shortcut with steady ascent on good terrain (thankfully no bikers!) meeting up with the forest track again. I followed this until it ended. I then struck W over felled forest when I should have gone NW. This caused a bit of extra work but I then found the pillar amongst the few remaining trees. Pillar in good condition with FB and cement plug. There is some damage to one top corner. Returning I found a trace of the staked path mentioned by past visitors. This picked the track up and I returned the same way. Not much views from the trig but some nice views on the walk.

Plenty of parking in Croy then along the marked track, part of which is the John Muir Way, to the steepish hillock where the pillar sits atop the fort site. Very interesting to see a section Antonines Wall for the first time and fine autumn colours to enjoy. Too dreich to appreciate what must be fine views from the pillar on a clearer day.

All fixtures in place. Some damage around the spider but nothing bad at present.

I parked up by the reservoir on the road that takes you to the monument. I then walked along this same road and took the footpath (as previous loggers) that runs roughly north to the pillar. This lead me to a field of kale with the pillar out of sight and cows present. I therefore retraced my steps and took the marked path further east. The farmer was nearby but didn't spot me. I followed round the outside of his kale field then as I turned for the final section there he was ... with cows! He was fine with me bagging the trig and showed me where to go though advised me I'd get wet. I did but the views over Holwell, the Dee Estuary and the Wirral were worth it. Same route back. Spider and FB in place, cap missing, pillar sound.

Ah this one has been in my thoughts for a while! Attempted, but failed, to find it on 27th July after 30 minutes of thrashing about in nettles and brambles. This time with the vegetation died back (and possibly cut back) it was easily found. I parked on Rocklands Lane and took the track up before heading into the trees. Pillar in good order with all fixings. Those views that are open are of farmland and I was treated to a fine sunrise. Only one (Burton Reservoir) Wirral trig left but the owner has previously refused me permission to visit it - shame as I very much like this part of England.

Splendid walk! Parked at Redkirk and walked down the track almost as far as it can go. The pillar was easily found in the corner of the field and a handy gap in the fencing eased access. Quite muddy near the pillar. All fixings in place and pillar in good condition on its exposed base. Very fine views as the sun set on the Solway Firth with the Cumbrian fells visible.

A fine leg-stretch on the long journey south! I also was pleased to strike a blow for us in the cairn v trig battle of the summiteer's civil war. Parked in the fisherman's layby by woods to SE. Along the road, up the track by the new house then into the wet field. I avoided the electric fence by using the handy fallen tree that has flattened it. On to the pasture top (thankfully the cows didn't spot me) for fine panoramic views. I don't think I'll ever forget watching a shower drive in over Tinto as eventually it caught me on my way back. Pillar has all fixings but significant cracking.

No views from pillar but M9, Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument all visible on this wee walk.

As previous visitors I took the farm track and followed the edge of the trees. The pillar was easily found in the trees. I was glad to have my wellies though as the track was rather wet. Lovely autumn colours on the drive out and back to Inverness. Is trigpointing turning me into a Sunday driver?!

This poor pillar has had a tough time. The top is shows much damage though the spider is still there. Asphalt plug, FB in place. Some of the flint used in the concrete mix is visible. I followed the bridleway from the south along the hedgerow. The pillar is easily spotted and the views are of open Suffolk farmland. There is room to park the car near the bridleway signpost.

Room for a few cars to park by Cowraik nature reserve. Up the path through the nature reserve then I took a branch to the left when things got steeper.Over the fence into a sheep field then over another in to the copse that's home to the trig. To describe this place before sunrise I would use Dame Edna's beloved adjective 'spooky'. Easy find however and trig in very good condition with all fixings in place.

I left the car by the B871 where it meets the E side of Naver Forest and headed N towards the N-S 'ridge' of this fine hill. Though not a direct route to the summit I was richly rewarded with a view of the sun rising between the Ben Griams. At first the going was wet underfoot but with height it got drier. I then turned W towards the summit and pillar with a bit of ascent / descent; though never difficult. The summit is a fine place to linger but with strong wind I didn't stay too long! The views were extensive; Ben Griams, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope, Ben Klibreck and many more. What I will remember, however, is seeing Hoy floating on a blanket of mist. Pillar has asphalt plug; spider and flush bracket are present. A little weathering on the upper part of the W face but nothing of concern. Structurally sound. I took a direct route back to the road joining it W of where I'd parked.

'And liberty she pirouette when I think that I am free'. Well I felt very liberated as I stood naked beside the pillar with all of Bath below me! I parked at Batheaston by the river and walked up Solsbury Lane. Fairly steep climb but rewarded with very fine views over Bath. Cattle were very docile and with crepuscular rays streaming down I sincerely felt at peace. This hill is a place of positive spiritual energy. Pillar sits high on its eroded plinth - I hope it doesn't topple. FB in place but spider cap is missing. This summit is a place on which to linger.

After driving up and down the wrong road three times I felt that old question creep back in to my mind: why? Checking the map and waking up a bit soon had me on the correct path however and I just spotted the pillar on its plinth in the hedegrow with a very handy layby opposite and the familiar euphoria had returned. Pillar is in good condition, though fairly moss-covered. All fixings in place including cap with raised lettering. Geocache nearby. No real views from the pillars location.

Not the most exciting Marilyn from the point of view of a climb but still a pleasant walk. Parked at start of forest track to NE and followed said track up to the comms mast compound. Plenty of purple heather in bloom.

Caithness pillars complete and my 100th pillar too! Cycled along mapped tracks from Loch More to Skyline Loch. These are mostly good and often very good. Leaving the bike I attempted to walk round the east side of Skyline Loch but soon gave up as the bog made those unnerving sucking noises. The longer but drier west side led to a deer fence which I then followed to the pillar itself. This is indeed awesome country and looking around I could see many of the Caithness trig summits I've visited. Pillar is in good condition with traces of white paint and all fixtures in place. Same route back. Loch Caise makes a fine rest stop. This hobby has really allowed me to get to know my own county.

My 99th pillar and I have one in mind for the 100! With a new family member though it may have to wait. Parked up in a small parking area on the road that runs along the waters edge. From here a grassy path leads up through the whins to the field where the trig is located. A short walk along the edge of the whins and I easily found the pillar. It is is good order with all fixings. It still has good traces of white paint. The gorse spoils some of the views but this is still a nice spot. The views from the car park are very fine towards the Black Isle and Inverness.

'Shinrin-yoku'. I parked up in the Wellhill car park (1.50 for 2 hours) and pretty much followed the well signposted Hill 99 walk to the viewing tower. The pillar is very near to this and has its FB and spider in place although no cap. Still some white paint apparent. No real views from the pillar but good views over the forest canopy from the tower. Don't miss the tree planted by Harold Wilson in 1969!

I love the views you get in this part of the world. I was reminded of the pillar at Nigg which isn't that far as the crow flies. I parked in the parking area for South Sutor then across the pasture (wet in places) to the pillar with a fence-hop required. I avoided the cows. Pillar has its FB and spider but Alicia Key's brother Allen has nabbed the cap. Some signs of cracking about two thirds of the way up the pillar. Excellent views all around - I only wish I'd had more time to linger. Plenty of skylarks around too.

Parked up at Braemore and cycled / walked up the track towards Glutt Lodge. There's a lovely loch by the track called Lochan nam Bo Riabhach with fine views over towards the Caithness hills. Approx. a mile and a half before the Glutt the track bends left and it's here I left the bike. I then walked over the flank of Cnoc Liath, up to the summit of Beinn Glas-choire then down into the col between it and Ben Alisky before final ascent. There are some boggy sections in parts but fortunately for me much of the ground was frozen - it was cold! The summit of Ben Alisky has a well built beehive shaped cairn adjacent to the pillar. The views are panoramic and extensive. Hoy was easily visible, vast swathes of Caithness and parts of Sutherland. The pillar has all fixings in place but has a damaged top and hair-line cracking. I returned the same way. Only one more Caithness pillar to go!

I'd been dreading this one a bit as the OS map shows it sitting in a huge area of bog. I was wrong to have done so - it was a fantastic experience. I left the car by the A897 and went through the gate by Lochan Dubh (as Perigrinus) with a clear sky and a growing brightness over the Knockfin Ridge as sunrise approached. Standing by Lochan Dubh listening to the songbirds in the nearby copse of trees and the very gentle whisper of the water my eye was drawn to a large bird approaching. A white-tailed eagle slowly flew by silhouetted against the dawn sky. It made an unforgettable sight. Then a fish splashed in the loch, the sun rose clear over the Knockfin Ridge and I got underway. I headed across ground that was sometimes very squelchy and at other times firm and dry aiming for the nearest of the deep cleaves in the ridge. It was a fine wee gorge with waterfall and views towards the high ground beyond Loch an Ruathair which was glowing in the sun. Reaching the Knockfin Plateau the peat hags and small lochans characterise a landscape that is very special indeed. It was a zig zag course between the pools that were quite empty for the time of year. I found that far from being in fear of the terrain I was enjoying it! The haunting cries of the golden plovers, the solitude and the vast open vista I will never forget. The pillar sits by a deep hag and is in vgc. All fixings are in place. I took a more direct route back down to the accompaniment of skylarks. The sun had never stopped shining.

The Irishman's Hill and I'm in distinguished trigpointing company recording this one! I parked up on the verge of the A897 just south of Upper Suisgill Lodge where a track heads NE eventually ending by the Suisgill Burn. The hill is in sight from here and I followed one of the tributaries out on to the open hill. At first the going is squelchy and a mix of grass/heather. On higher and it dries up underfoot before reaching the upper part of the hill where the vegetation is short and the ground firm. The views west get better and better as height is gained. The top is mostly quartzite stones with a full panoramic view. I had a lovely clear morning and could see Ben Hope, Ben Loyal, Meall Horn, Foinavon, Ben Griams, Ben Klibreck, Creag Scalabsdale and many others. Perhaps the finest view is towards Small Mount & Morven. Looking north you see the scores of dubh lochs on the Knockfin Heights. The pillar has all fixings and is in vgc in its wind shelter cairn where I scoffed two jam pieces before returning back the same way.

Caithness 3rd Order Pillars complete! I didn't expect this walk to be anything special - I was wrong. I parked in the forest car park on the Blingery track off the Thrumster-Haster road. It was just after sun-up and the whole way up the forest road I was serenaded by songbirds. A divine perfume filled the air and the morning sun played light & shade on the trees. The firebreak that leads to the clearing where the trig sits was a carpet of shining dew drops and the pine trees themselves glistened with water droplets whilst the early mist slowly burned off. The pillar is in good order other than hairline cracks across it. All fixings are in place. No view as such in its spacious clearing but what a lovely 'bag'. I returned the same way.

Scaraben climbed on a cold, cold day. Just to see that the trig was okay. With asphalt plug and FB fine. Though a weathered top - now enough of this rhyme! I last climbed this hill when the Sugababes were big in the charts and I wondered if they'd record the above lyrics with me to celebrate bagging all the Caithness primary pillars. A fantasy, I know, but one that got me to the top! I parked up at Braemore by the telephone box and followed the track over the bridge, past an abandoned house, over the deer fence ladder and on to open hill. I decided on the longer and more gradual route up the col between E Scaraben and Scaraben then along to the summit. I managed to find a knee-deep bog in this col! The top is a fine viewpoint and the highest point on a good ridge with excellent views. The pillar sits in a wind shelter cairn and is weathered a bit on its top edges and corners. Views include Morven, Maiden Pap, Creag Thoraraidh, Ben Dhorain, Clyth Ness, Tarbat Ness, Ben Griams, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope and a large area of Caithness moor. Back by pretty much the same route.

A bleak, grey January day with a cold wind and incessant rain - perfect for trigpointing! Parked in the Seadrift Visitor Centre car park then over the A836 (quite busy)and over the gate in to the field next to the community forest. This was rather wet underfoot! Over another gate and then a fence hop and the pillar came in to view. It is sited on rough pasture. Pillar has all fixings and is in good condition on its exposed base. No real views today, though Dunnet Head was in sight and I'd imagine Orkney could be seen on a better day.

Parked up at Nigg Hall and walked NE along the road to where the mapped track heads up towards the pillar. I met a rather lovely jogger on this section! Up the track, with views of Bayfield Loch, to the open pasture summit where the trig is easily seen. Pillar in good condition with all fixings in place. Cap has raised lettering. Good views around. I then headed to the 205m Marilyn summit. This involves getting through a section of rough ground featuring gorse, leftover branches from tree felling and young saplings. However, it's not impenetrable. Over pasture then to the Marilyn summit with its tiny cairn. Good views from here with Mount Eagle looking very enticing!! From here I dropped W down to the road and back to the car. A good 4 mile round walk. As Jonglew says the whole Tarbat Peninsula is worth exploring.

Parked up in pull-in about 100 yards before where the private road to Shurrery Lodge begins. It's a 4mile or so walk from here to the pillar. Most of this, however, is on excellent track. Over the Shurrery weir, round behind the lodge then out in to open flow country. I chose a day of fresh breeze and very occaisional drizzle squalls - very atmospheric! On a spring morning with clear sky and sunrise this would be a divine walk. The track leads you to the base of the hill where a steady climb on dry heathery slopes leads you up to the top. The summit around the pillar is, however, a wetter affair. A maze of little pools and water courses that can easily be leapt over. Pillar in very good condition with all fixings in place. Same route back.

Parked up at Boulfruich Wind Farm. Pillar is visible from here on its rounded bump of a hill about 2 2/3 miles distant. Direct route through pasture and moor with the Houstry Burn having to be forded. Wet underfoot in sections and although most of the terrain is quite benign there was a short section of tussocks about 20 mins in to the walk that slowed progress! Never a steep climb and wide open views. Head wind out and rain squalls made this a memorable day - good Flow Country weather! Same route back. Pillar in good condition with all fixings in place. Usual bird of prey evidence. On the whole 2 h 15min walk I saw 2 red deer, 1 red grouse, 1 wren, 1 snipe, 0 people and a raven. Oh and near the windfarm there is a ruined Iron Age settlement.

Parked up in spacious parking area on A897 at Forsinain then followed the track to base of the hill. This is a good track and could well be cycled. Heathery slope - mostly dry- with a flat summit. Excellent viewpoint where I lingered with pleasure. Panoramic view including Ben Loyal, Ben Griams, Morven, Scaraben and a vast expanse of flow country. Pillar in good order with all fixings although there is some damage to one side of the flush bracket.Same route back with the only disconcerting thing being the sound of rifle shooting in the forest somewhere nearby!

Little view with trees, poles, pylons and turbines prevalent. Interestingly the tinsel that appears in the photograph I found at Sheriff's Park trig in Cumbria back in November. I kept it for this very day!

Parked car at the 90 bend on the Dunn Road between the A882 & B870 where there is room to pull in off the road. Made a beeline for the trig through rashes, field and heather. From road to ENE. Quite a steep climb. Perhaps an easier route would be up the col between Beinn Uarie and Beinn Dhorain which is where I descended after visiting the Graham summit. Rather wet at the foot of the hill, dry up on the broad summit ridge. Pillar has all fixings and is in very good condition helped by its surrounding shelter cairn. Fine views towards Morven, Scaraben & Smean. Also in view was Ben Klibreck and the Tarbat Ness peninsula. A clearer day would afford more distant views.

Beautiful clear morning for a walk up this fine Munro. Started up from Achnasheen following burn for quite a distance. Cut across wet section towards Fionn Bheinn ridge. Nice walk then to summit. Breathtaking views of Liatach, Slioch, Beinn Eighe and the Fannachs. Spider gone and pillar top damaged however FB in place. Returned the same way other than passing over summit of Creagan na Laogh. This is a walk for a clear day as the views are excellent.

This pillar is located at Fron Farm campsite. Checked in at reception where a rather lovely lady granted permission to visit the pillar. Construction work going on around pillar itself so I did not linger. Challenged by a man on a quad as to what I was up to. After explanation there was no problem and he assured me that the pillar would be given a good spot once works were complete. Pillar itself has all fixings and is in good condition. Looks a nice campsite!

Parked up in Golspie and followed the Ben Bhraggie footpath to the Sutherland Monument. This part is a steady, steep climb on a good footpath. From the monument I followed the track beyond until the pillar came within distant sight. Straight line then across squelchy grass/ heather with a gentle climb to Ben Lundie's summit. Stags at the rut to my south on lower ground were bellowing away. Pillar in good condition (built without FB) and sits on a fine viewpoint with many tops visible including Morven & Ben Griams. Sea views also. Returned same way with sections between trig and monument runnable. Fine day out!

Situated on edge of Castlecraig Quarry. I parked at the roadside opposite to the quarry entrance. Walked around outer perimeter of quarry eventually reaching pillar. The view from its present site is nothing special but the views of the Cromarty Firth from my walk to it were very fine. Maybe it could be sited on the headland rather than its rather sorry present location.

Climbed up hill which is fairly steep. No real view from the top due to the trees.

Parked at Scotscalder Station and took track to bottom of hill. There is a very wet part of this track. Followed road up hill that has mobile phone mast. Great views. Standing stones in vicinity are worth seeing.

Parked down road towards Ulbster Mains farm near cemetery. Climbed the hill. Fence or two to cross. Nice views.

Visit to summit in those bleak days before I discovered trigpointing. My photographic records confirm my memory though and the trig was 'bagged'. I visited during a 'pilgrimage' to the Robert Taylor UFO site nearby. I recall desent views over Livingston New Town.
