I wasn't expecting much from this trig, but it turned out to be a little gem. There are views all round, with the western Peak District hills to the East and Manchester & the Cheshire Plain to the West. There is also a huge cross nearby overlooking Manchester.

A "game" using your GPS receiver. Find a remote trig on a featureless moor, enter a grid reference using your map reading skills rather than the actual reference, and try to find the trig on a day when visibility is 25 yards! Hence the score of zero, not much to see in a radius of 25 yards (see photo)!

Not sure what the highest number of trigs that can be seen from a trig is, but I reckon that on a clear day with a pair of binoculars there must be a possibility of seeing half a dozen from Harry Hut. Unfortunately, today was not a clear day and I didn't have any binoculars - perhaps another day. No sign of Harry or his hut.

Memorial The trig is "dedicated" to a dog called Penny, who died aged 15 in 1998. Perhaps this was her favourite trig point for peeing against. Not sure I approve of making trigs into memorials, especially for dogs.

The views from Clougha are superb on a clear day (which isn't too often). Amongst others, you can see the Lakeland Fells, Pen-y-ghent, Heysham Power Station, Blackpool Tower, Snowdonia and Pendle Hill.

On a clear day... can (almost) see forever. A helpful plate on top of the trig point identifies the main points of interest.

Although this trig point is called Mallowdale Pike, it is in fact two miles away from the actual Mallowdale Pike. It is about 1/2 mile east(ish) of the Ward's Stone trig point, but is apparently 1 metre higher (though it looks lower). Both are on a plateau, so could qualify as the two nearest trig points with no discernable valley between them. See

(not) Mallowdale Pike The real Mallowdale Pike can just about be seen immediately above Toad's head (25/4/5 - no it can't - it is behind the hill shown!). I think Ingleborough is in the background.

Hawthornthwaite Fell Top Actually on Duke of Westmoreland's estate, but can be viewed from United Utilities land. Somewhat eroded!!! The Ordnance Survey certainly get top marks for building good foundations!!!©langden
