I approached Whitfell from the south parking in the lay-by at the summit of the fell road between Corney and Duddon Bridge (near to Stoneside Hill )I’ve used this lay-by before when bagging Black Combe that was a big mistake as its very hard going in that direction (spongy ) However it proved to be an excellent choice to approach Whitfell , from this point its about two and half miles to Whitfell mostly over short grassy paths with only gentle climbs, I set off north along a track beside the wall towards Buckbarrow ,at pegs crag the wall jumps up on to a big bolder before continuing towards Buck Barrow and as I approached this point the wall end takes on a distinctly triglike shape (I didn’t look for a FB honest ) continuing onwards I decided to skirt around Buckbarrows eastern side as it was shrouded in cloud intending to visit its summit on the way back, there are large boulders strewn about in this area and I managed to slip off one spraining my wrist luckily my camera was safely packed away in my rook sack (I slipped doing Ben Nevis and smashed my old camera) pushing on I also skirted round Burn Moor the cloud mostly clearing as I approached whitfell summit with its beehive shaped summit cairn and well built shelter this proved to be very welcome as the wind was quite strong, The views from whitfell are magnificent to the north the high western fells Scafell etc look very impressive turning right Harter sits in front of Bowfell then the wonderful langdale pikes Can be seen next the Coniston range comes into view followed by the Dunnerdale fells then the distant Morecambe bay looking south now Buckbarrow is now cloud free with Black Combe in the distance to the east The Irish Sea with Sellafield further up the coast, this trig is certainly spoilt for views and I think well worth a revisit some time, heading back I again skirted round Burnmoor as the wind was quite strong now but I did visit the summit of Buckbarrow this place looks like a massive fortress when approached from the north and well worth a visit, then down the track and back to the lay-by, A great walk highly recommended

Had coffee at the trig and marvelled at the views with the only other walker I met we both agreed the sights where the best Christmas present we could have hoped for all be it a day early, had a quick look over the edge at Sand tarn then over the plateau to the well built cairns or standards not as grand as the ones on nine Standards rigg but well worth a look,a Christmas eve I will never forget, sorry for going on about it but it was one of those magical days that remind you what its all about.
