I came up from the field north of the small pier north of Portencross. This involved a messy scramble through undergrowth from around NS177494 to reach the clifftop. Then nice green cow pastures to the summit. (Fortunately the cows were occupied at lower altitudes.) Fantastic views as the sun finally broke through in the last hour of the day: Hunterston B (A is hidden from view); Little Cumbrae; Arran; down the coast to Ardrossan and beyond; even the windfarm on North Hill looked good in the late afternoon sunshine. I descended northeast and then followed the lanes round to NS194511 before turning north along the bicycle path past Hunterston Castle towards Fairlie, a very pleasant route down.

At present there is a way in for thin folks (i got in with small rucksack still on my back) a little way down to the left where one bar is missing. Cloudbase was about 200m this afternoon so I missed out on a decent view.

(Construction worker had tried to warn me off at MOD site entrance at NN274001 but fortunately I was in front of the sign which suggested access was normally OK but that one should report to the office. So I told him I was going ahead and decided to treat him as representative of the office!)

Beware that it is on the water side of the path unlike what is shown on the current explorer map! Only three years after the pillar was a brilliant white (see Rob's photo) it is well on its way back to plain old concrete. The gorse is also swallowing it up again and killing the immediate view. However this small headland is well worth walking around on a clear day though. Views across the water are tremendous and I spotted seals basking today. It might also be interestingly exposed in a winter storm!

Kicking my way through the snowy heather from Gallangad Muir was a fair drag on the sections without a forestry track. A distinctive peak as viewed from the north but presumably less so from the east. The cloud filled in while I was on my way up but the views to the north were still fairly extensive.

Easy enough to find, although I had rather a bash through brush to get there. Why is the hill subtitled Mount Misery anyway? It seems a new path runs over the actual summit, although not past the mossy trig. In winter at least there is a partial view of the lake and I managed to time it so that a rainbow was suggesting a pot of gold on Inchmurrin.

Hit this one during a sharp shower. Could see some snow in the Hill of Stake direction. When I was a wee bit east of the trig a snowy Ben Lomond briefly came into view. At least I think it was Ben Lomond but the parting of cloud was very brief! Yeaman baggers might like to question whether there is a higher point around the small puddle shown on the map at NS381551 which is encircled by a 210m contour (the trig is marked at 210m). This sad man decided he had to go there.

The Campsies were doing disappearing tricks.

Decent view (presumably outstanding on a clear day). Rather more tricky to reach though. My first attempt (5/2/7) from the SE (from the track to Banks farm) in the dark was doomed! No headlamp could have guided me through all of that gorse! Rob's suggested approach from the east works out fine in daylight. After the initial fairly steep pull the path disappears leaving rather a slog to the trig. Underfoot conditions are rough for such a low urban summit!

The cover is missing. I found the Berntsen pretty easily thanks to the first photo on the page. It is on the north side of the cycle path just to the northwest of the bridge as shown in the photo and to the south of school playing fields. The photo looks SE along the path. The remains of the doocot (presumably that's what it was: the path is littered with doocots and gang grafitti) are only just about visible now, so don't expect to find a big burnt patch as in the photo.

The radar station is being replaced with a new one in the Campsies because a huge wind farm is being built, apparently very close to the summit if the construction traffic I had to avoid today is anything to go by. public park was once the site of a roman fort. graffiti in keeping with the lovely council houses adjoining the park. decent view of the kilpatrick hills though. trig a little north of the highest point on this small bump, so probably only visible at any significant distance from the north.
