(thinking the trig point was there before the cairn); my next thought, having read the plaque was 'What's the point?' - surely the cairn would have prevented taking measurements for 120 degrees or more. Extra point given for the history.

Final part of our journey, having started in Nebiggin-on-Lune at lunchtime. This pillar looks as though it's been green, pink and red at various times in the past. White and shiny now though. It looks to be bigger than most but maybe that's just because the ground has eroded around it.

A short walk having hopped the easy fence by Brookfield Farm. No signs of human life anywhere. Pillar and metalwork all in very good condition, very poor views though. According to the local development plan this pillar will be just inside the school grounds when it is built. The aircraft hangers shown in Peregrinus' 'back' photo have been demolished, as have most other structures on and around the airfield.

There must have been a track running alongside the trig at one time because there is a solid (but hidden by the undergrowth) railway sleeper bridge across the ditch right next to it and a decent pedestrian-sized gap in the hedge. Knocked on the door of the big house (up the drive next to the cottage) and the lady of the house was happy for me to visit the pillar - even advised the safest route to avoid the mud & water. Walked from the water tower - through the edge of Hayley Wood where possible to avoid the very boggy track. Arrived at the Trig on the wrong side of the ditch so backtracked to cross over at the field end. Easy to get to and find at this time of year, hard up against the fence of the adjacent garden. There has obviously been a lot of bramble growing here that has been cut down to 3-4" long stubs. The householder was watching me from his kitchen either wondering what I was up to or thinking "Here's another of those spotter weirdo's" Pillar and metalwork in good condition, as you would expect in this location but views pretty poor.

Best time of year to get to this one as the foliage is quite easy to get through. Pillar in good condition but neighbour's compost heap is encroaching. High score due to the history - this is where William the Conqueror built a causeway into the Isle of Ely in an attempt to defeat Hereward the Wake and you can imagine the scene from the trig point, watching the Norman invaders drowning as their pathway sank into the marshes.

Area has recently been cleared of overgrowing vegetation

Stopped off at this pillar on our circular route around Bannau Sir Gaer from Blaenau. The cloud lifted quite suddenly as we left the TP giving us sudden views of the spectacular scenery to the North and East. Carried on to Llyn y fan Fawr where we camped and had a wonderfully clear moonrise over the lake followed by a spectacular sunrise in the morning.
