(Revisit) A wet, grey day for a swampy trek across Ilkley Moor. We walked from the road at Spicey Gill across Wicken Tree Crag and up to the pillar - a revisit for me and pillar #95 for my little trigbagger. Pillar is heavily weathered and a bit battered and bruised but is still standing strong. Views intermittent through the hill fog. We returned the same way and had a pint by the fire in The Flying Duck to warm up.

Parked on Ilkley Road. Took the excellent footpaths from the end of that road up to the pillar, which takes you past the communications mast at Whetstone Gate, and one of the Stanza Stones (the Puddle Stones) along the way. There are chunks missing from two of the top corners of the pillar, and around one of the spider arms. Great views from the pillar all around, including of the 'golf balls' at RAF Menwith Hill, of which there are now 37 in total! RAF Menwith Hill is the worlds largest electronic monitoring station.

A very steep climb out of Ilkley but once I reached the moor proper, I found myself immersed in this wonderful landscape. A flagstone path takes one all the way to the TP which is just as well as it is pretty soggy up there. The highest point on the moor and to date the highest pillar I have visited.

Given the dire warnings of venturing onto Ilkley Moor without a hat I was sure to wear mine today. It was the first cold day of autumn with a stiff northerly breeze, but that was ok because it was clear and bright with great visibility. Approached the top from Whetstone Gate and appreciated the flagstone path given how wet it was to the sides. Extra interest was provided by the Thimble Stones and poetry on the Stanza Stones. I was surprised to find out they were written by a Poet Laureate; I would have guessed it was by a local schools poem competition winner .

The FRA are 50 years old this year and encouraging people to participate and do at least 15 races off a pre-selected 50 list. Impossible to do all 50 since some races clash. Nice way of doing some new ones. Done a bit on Rombalds Moor, but never a fell race. Did a circular walk from Wells Road to visit this trig column (upper part is chipped). It is dedicated to all the FRA committee past/present who keep this sport alive. We have a wealth of experience amongst the runners and they dont get paid a sausage. For the love of the sport. Well the trig's ok but the moor from Whetstone Gate to the pillar has been trashed, even some of the flags have been moved. Looks like some sort of (motor) bike 'event' has taken place between the road/track and the pillar with sections of huge, wide, deep ruts in the moorland. There must be places where landowners let you desecrate moorland legally but some scumbags just don't give a sh*t! Latest of innumerable visits, and sadly the most depressing.

Rombalds Moor - view across Wharfedale towards Menwith Hill.
Wicking Crag - map Wicking Crag is marked with a triangulation station symbol on the OS Keighley and Ilkley Sheet SE 04/14 Pathfinder 671 1:25000 1983 edition, at SE129434. It doesn't appear on any more recent maps and is not in the Passive Station database.
Wicking Crag - the location is on Bingley Moor, approx 1.5 miles SE of the Rombalds Moor pillar and is hardly a crag - just a scattering of small gritstone outcrops. The site is quite easy to find - follow the right of way between Rombalds Moor and the Bingley Road to a point roughly mid-way between two stiles in the boundary wall. Then aim west for the local high point. Good views including Almscliff Crag in Wharfedale and Wainman's Pinnacle in Airedale, both of which are also marked on older maps as non-pillar trig stations.
Wicking Crag - the station is a bolt, just over 1" diameter, set in a boulder. The remains of flaking white marker make it easy to identify.
