It was a nice afternoon so we popped over into Wensleydale and parked up at Thornton Rust to follow the Bridleway and then Permissive Path up to the summit plateau. A nice easy walk to start with but a bit of a push at the end when I recreated the soundtrack to 2001 A Space Odyssey, the bit where Dave Bowman returns to the Discovery One. After that it was a nice, albeit windy, stroll around the top, first the "new" pillar, then the site of the original, before heading to the western edge to look up Wensleydale and down over Semer Water. More or less took the same route back, Beer in the George & Dragon at Aysgarth as we didn't really feel like tacking The Victoria in Worton.

September Camp - Aysgarth. Ascent via Thornton Rust Moor where a ladder stile promotes access to the hill. Way up reasonably obvious from here and becomes a steep pant to reach the summit plateau. Once the fake pillar is achieved the remains are located on a small rocky outcrop WNW. Crags nearby would encourage caution in mist, however today was a beautiful day and gave supreme views. How the National Park approved such professional vandalism in removing this pillar is beyond my comprehension, and I'm not marking Addlebrough down for their crimes. Highly recommend a visit to the Wensleydale crocodile hill.

No longer a trespass as it's been on Access Land for a few years now. We parked up at Thornton Rust in the (alleged) parking area - an area of rough ground that was full of hay bales and that might just have squeaked in another car today. Took the bridleway towards Carpley Green that was stoney until it reached the open moor whereafter it was very muddy. Wayposting & ladder stiles (see map) made accessing the trig site easy enough from a route point of view but it is a bit of a slog up the final steep hill section to the hill plateau. Weather and visibility today was poor. On the accompanying map image ........................ A = parking point at Thornton Rusk / B = Wayposted 'Permissive Path' and stile over wall / C = Wayposted 'Permissive Path' to Addleborough summit / D = Stile in wall, immediately beyond which is the 'replacement' trig / E = Stile over wall @ SD947880 as noted by Caroleengel / X = The trig pillar site. Individual trig pillar (see RogerTempleman's log) destroyed by an act of shortsighted vandalism by the National Park Authority and the National Trust. It really beggars belief that someone thought that people would make the effort to climb this hill and not visit the summit regardless of whether the trig pillar was there or not. Why would you stop at the cairn (the 'replacement trig') when your view is impaired by the wall immediately to the east? The natural viewpoint is from the hill summit i.e. where the trig pillar was. As for the cup and whatever marked stone/rock ................ well, I suppose someone must love (or indeed 'see') it but it's passed me by.

Not there but foundations are visible. Permissive path up the back of the hill. Park in Thornton Rust and go up track. Crags round 80% of hill so only 1 way up. Good views at the top. I Emailed YDNP and got this response Thank you for your enquiry. The trig point was removed by us as part of a project that we undertook with the National Trust (landowner) around 5 years ago. Prior to the new right of open access commencing May 2005, there has been no right of access onto Addlebrough. Both the National Trust & the National Park Authority had received numerous enquiries asking if access of some sort could be created. One of the issues to the summit area, was the Sheduled Ancient Monument - namely the cup & ring marked stones adjacent to the trig point. One of these stones had been vandalised / damaged and both the National Park archaelogist and English Heritage were concerned that additional non intentional damage could occur, particulay as the trig point may attract people to the highest part of that plateau. The decision was made that by removing the trig point and locating a cairn (but not the actual trig point) in the vicinity, this may act as a discreet way of reducing walker numbers to the actual cup & ring stone area as those people would be attracted to the cairn. This has been relatively successful. A permissive path with stiles was also created to the summit from the Thornton Rust / Cubeck road and from the Thornton Rust/ Carpley Green bridleway, as part of the project to allow access.
