(2918) Made use of the large parking area on Askwith Moor Road. Then walked the 300m or so N to the gate and the start of the track. Air was heavy today thanks to the recent burning of the heather. The pillar sits just off a straight track about 400m from the roadside in open access land, so getting to it is no problem. Pillar is in overall good condition. Centre cap is missing with a plastic replacement fitted. Nice extensive views at the location. RAF Menwith Hill visible in the distance - which reminded me of when the military police stopped me when I was trigging in the area a few years ago. Also visible was the comms mast near TP4420 - saving that beauty for better drier weather. Pillar history: Built on the 16th of November 1953, cost not listed in archive. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1986.

Access is as straightforward as you could ask for, parking on the grass verge opposite the (locked) gate. Quick hop over the gate and the trig and good track are all access land, so no problems. Pillar still in great, weathered condition and the views are wonderful. Pillar #29 for my little trigbagger.

In 1987 this marker was refixed and upgraded to a secondary station, with new OSGB36 Number SE38/24 in computation block A001 as part of the North Central England Adjustment. The station name gained the suffix '(1985)' at this time. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Parked by west side of Askwith Moor Road at SE174509 beside entrance to mapped track. The views are fab from the trig. There are a number of carved stones around the moor and you can picture folks thousands of years ago carving them as they took in the scenery of a full 360 degrees: but today's visibility was only rated 'good' with the usual murk for distance viewing. Good views to Menwith Hill, Rombalds Moor, Ben Ridding, Almscliff Crag. Good view of Swinsty Resr from the track below the trig. Temp 9c, cloudy, but dry day. Distance from CP is .74 km, so the O&B walk was 1.4km. High score with views and trig condition.<br> 20-05-12 Have now reported the locked gate to Ramblers Central Office for further action.

Accessible and visible. I approached from Askwith Moor Road by climbing the gate onto the shooting track which leads directly to the pillar. Some lovely views of the surrounding moorland. Pillar in good condition within a circle of stones (slightly overgrown). Plastic plug and all four holes open.

Parking at the gate and a short walk up the track to the trig, eerie in the fog. No idea whose boots are next to the trig.

Yorkshire. Not sure why there is so much barbed wire round the gate where the track leaves the road. It is not going to deter triggers. Plastic cap.

An easy tig from Askwith Moor Road (there's even a parking place a couple of hundred yards south of the trig) but we came up from Addingham via Beamsley Beacon & Denton Moor and across the open moor - without too much trouble although it has been very dry. Pretty good views today across lower Wharfedale in the afternoon sunshine.
