Was originally going to park to the NW of the pillar but the road was closed so instead visited it after taking in Cairnscarrow. A tough moorland crossing with heather bashing, bog and tussocks to contend with. The trig is rather overshadowed by the adjacent rhododendron bush.

From High Craigcaffie, following the wall that starts at NX 1002 6473 as it curves south to NX 1023 6449, whence an easy trek across a mixed sheep/cattle pasture to pick up the mast access track at Balker Belt. The first part is quite rough with a couple of steepish sided but narrow defiles to negotiate, but once the pasture is reached it's plain sailing. The pillar was built without a flush bracket; centre cap retained, raised lettering; one sight hole open, 2 other plugs just beginning to degrade. Some moorland views N, but nothing inspiring.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 8th September 1954 costing £15.10s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NX29/T1 in 1955. Levelled for height value at pillar top also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in May 1985. SITE VISIT: Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. This pillar has never had a flush bracket and is vented through the sighting hole facing 79° ENE. Situated on a bleak tussocky moor, this ground is very difficult to negotiate in any conditions. The unclassified road 2km to the north offers verge parking.
