In the snow the pillar felt enough like a trig to me.

Scenery amazing but trig point gone, now a big stone stack that at least looks nice but a shame to have done away with the trig point

Shame that the national trust removed the trig. nice views oterwise, if a bit windy and touristy. Not the nicest hill on Exmoor but worth the walk.

A fairly gentle walk up from the car park to the east. Reasonable views today but a bit hazy. Although no pillar remains, nevertheless quite an interesting location as the Exmoor high point. See TP7321 for my pictures.

Steady, enjoyable plod up from the hotel car park in Wootton Courtenay, then back via Dunkery Gate, Spangate and Digland Lanes - lovely walk in improving weather. Could see Welsh coast but not Dartmoor. I like the NT cairn and the troposcope, which is like a chopped-off trig after all!

My friends offered to help me move the cairn to see if was still underneath but I thought that may be going a bit far. Made a day of it by doing a circular walk from horton. The only let down was seeing Wales get beaten by England in the rugby afterwards.

I know I visited Dunkery Beacon on 3 or 4 occasions between 1995 - 2000, but I have no dates or pictures of any of those visits. Since then I can account for visits on 28/07/2001, 20/07/2002, 28/07/2002, 22/06/2004, 05/08/2006 and 18/08/2006...there have probably been a couple more! Visited with assorted friends over the years, including Dr Mike, Prof Yaffle, Francesca, Bevi, Gil to name a few. I've used the Toposcope to provide clues in a couple of Treasure Hunts I've organised in the area. Come up here early in the morning when there's no one else about and this is a really magical place, one of my favourites spots in Southern England.
