From road junc to SSW, parking a little tight, but can get car off road. Pleasant walk up, steep initially, then pasture. Pillar sits at summit of hill of the same name. Foundations becoming a little exposed; original centre cap retained, deeply indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. Extensive panoramic views.

I parked 2km south of Cessford just off a T junction on minor road, near spot height 134. A wooden gate allows access. A faint path NW up through plantation then a walk to junction of stone walls at nt725218 where an interesting pair of double gates with double chain links allows entry into trig field. Pillar still retains a good coat of white paint. Spider plug intact. Plinth and concrete at ground level is eroded.Spotted 3 buzzards. My 4th of 4 trigs during lovely September weather.

My second visit, different route - from the gate to the SW and up the hillside through a wonderful hay meadow full of flowers and butterflies, and through to the Trig field via an odd double gate with 2 chains per gate arrangement - slightly over-engineered?! A much superior route than the direct schlepp up from the E. Third and final great hill of a tremendous day in the Borders.

Lots of cattle on the slope to the east of the pillar, so I parked at the Samieston junction & went through the gate directly opposite. Once up the hill there is a handy walkers gate through the wall south south west of the trig. Fine views, many hills visible. The pillar has had a coat of white paint since the last photo (Jan 19) but it was badly done & its all chipping off.

Parked along the road from the junction to the south and walked straight up the hill, then discovered we were on the wrong side of the dyke...then discovered the GOML landowner had gone rather gung-ho with the barbed wire. There was a walking access gate facing us, however it was barricaded off on both sides with secured metal gates and barbed wire. We walked down the dyke side to see if there was an alternative means of access and found another walking access gate, this time with a line of thigh-high barbed wire at both sides (see photo). We were determined to get through, which necessitated in crawling under the barb and climbing over the gate (which had also been secured shut). Complete arrogance on the part of the landowner as there was no livestock in any of the fields! Anyhoo, onto the trig...decent views down to Cessford Castle and across to Hare Law, where we'd been earlier in the day. We didn't linger long at the trig as we had the return via the assault course to look forward to!
