I parked at the parking area near the visitor centre for the Herma Ness RSPB reserve and walked north along the gravel path as far as Winnaswarta Dale. The main path changes to grass and turns west but I then immediately branched off onto another path leading north across the boggy moorland (with occasional wooden 'bridges') up to the top of Hermaness Hill. About 100m beyond the summit is where the bolt once rested. Now there is an assortment of small rocks and damaged small concrete bases with metal lashing points. About 15m SW is an overgrown circular arrangement of stones. OS database lists the bolt as "Destroyed 5/79". However the site is a haven for birds (bonxies abound) and has great views of Muckle Flugga lighthouse (TP9642), Out Stack and Saxa Vord (TP5826).
