Short hop from minor road. Went along S side hedgerow, in sheep pasture, as per tom's log below, only to find pillar more accessible from N side in scrubby, brambly hedgerow. Pillar has small chip from one top edge otherwise good. Top cap missing, no plug; front and RHD side sight holes closed, the other 2 not seen. Cleaned it up a little, removed ivy etc. Extensive 360deg views.

The pillar sits inside the hedge on the south side of a muddy arable field on a small hill to the west of Ilminster. It lacks a cap or plug and has FB S3740. A small chunk has been chipped off its top southern edge. The field was entered directly from the adjacent Barrington Hill Road. The site has a wide, largely agricultural view. To the south it looks across a shallow vale that rises up to low wooded hills on the fringe of the Blackdown Hills. To the north it looks over a wide expanse of low flat farmland towards distant misty low hills.

Easy access over a gate from the lane. As I approached the pillar, two roe deer appeared from by the side of it and scampered across the field - lovely! The pillar has no plug. The sightholes are closed and it's quite ivy-covered with some traces of paint. In a hedgerow between two arable fields with expansive all-round views.

Having chucked it down all morning, the rain cleared just as I pulled up in the car, watched by a gaggle of white geese in the garden of the nearby house. Nearest pub is "The Greyhound" in Staple Fitzpaine, which has a sign proclaiming it as "The Somerset Dining Pub of the Year 2005"! Too early to stop and sample the wares/beer.
