(1019) The famous crooked spire. Had a 10 minute connection wait at Chesterfield train station, so quickly bagged this one. Will return for this, and others in this area, next year. REVISIT: 26.7.20 A more leisurely exploration of Chesterfield today. Grade I listed St Mary and All Saints. The spire is certainly something to see up close. No sign of the 1GL Bolt, alas. Suspect it's been lost to newer extension work. Bagged the nearby flush bracket (10988) on Spa Lane whilst in the area.

amazing spire. could not find the pa bolt that was lurking here. St Mary and All Saints, the Crooked Spire Church, was built in the late 13th Century and finished around 1360. It’s the largest church in Derbyshire. The Spire stands 228 feet from the ground and leans 9 feet 5 inches from its true centre. The Spire was built straight and the reason that it 'twisted' may be the amount of green timber used during its construction. Then 32 tons of lead tiles were placed on top – enough to bend anyone’s back!

St Mary and All Saints. Church on this site since the 1100s, but this one is rather gloomy high victoriana. Extra marks for the fact that the spire is still standing, a modern stained glass window, and best of all (and totally unexpected) a sculpture of Madonna and Child by Peter Eugene Ball in the Lady Chapel.

Seen a few times over the years but I pick the day when I tried and failed to find the 1GL bolt on the north transept. I presume the OS decided the spire was stable before using it, otherwise the condition should be Moved instead of Good.
