In the previous century this was first stop on a coach day trip to North Wales... one dual carriage way and a number of decades later at last a stop on a suitably gleaming wintry day.

St Margaret's Church, Bodelwyddan ((nicknamed 'The Marble Church'). Stunning Grade II listed church, built between 1856-60 in the decorated gothic style, with a 202 foot spire which can be seen for miles around. It is called the Marble Church because it was built out of 14 varieties of marble, including Belgian Red marble, Anglesey marble and Purbeck marble. All good with the spire. There is a cut benchmark on the south west jut of the tower (south east face). There is also a cut benchmark and 1GL/PA bolt, and a possible pivot benchmark as well, on the north east face of the tower at the nearby St Asaph Cathedral. In terms of the pivot, there is no arrow, so it may or may not be a pivot benchmark.

Passed it again and thought it must be an Intersected Station. A few miles back towards Conwy on the beach by the A55 is a mass of concrete sea defences which at first glance looks like a home for retired trig pillars. A second glance reveals them to be hexagonal!

A striking church, prominent alongside the A55, a road complained of by previous loggers. Sorry, but I probably contributed significantly to the road noise as I passed by in my campervan.

The strikingly white Church of St Margaret (“The Marble Church”) stands on the eastern edge of the small town of Bodelwyddan to the south of Rhyl. From the churchyard the Clwydian Range could be seen on the horizon to the east and Bodelwyddan Castle is on a hillside to the south. There is constant traffic noise from the adjacent A55. This elaborate Victorian church also has an impressive interior including marble columns and richly carved choir stalls. It is a Grade II* listed building and has a surviving cut bench mark on the corner of its tower.

Being a native North Walian this church has always been in my conscious for as long as I can remember. Returning on long road journeys from across the border the unmistakable sight of the spire approaching was the first sign that we were just about home. Formidable church, in Marble. St Margaret's, 1860. Graveyard contains Canadian soldiers, died from flu and as a consequence of a mutiny, when they got fed up with not being able to get home after the 14/18 war. Imagine getting through that war, then dying in Wales, waiting for a ship home
