Approached from footpath by farm at layby NW of pillar on the A171. Bulls in next field up to the left but separated by an electric fence. I followed the field edge to the trig. As I got near the pillar the lapwings all went mad, shortly followed by the bulls bellowing and then donkeys kicking off! I returned to the layby via the field between the pillar and the A171 which seemed the safer bet at this stage. Footpath to the south was through a field of cows and calves today.

Parked in layby, over locked gate and up field to the pillar. Looking back, there is a detachable electric fence connection which avoid the fence.

Followed the hedge lines from the A171 but then faced with a short legged dilemma of crossing 2 electric fences to get to the pillar. Took the prudent way and crawled underneath. My only view of Flyingdales in a 3 day break to the area.

Had cattle problems last time, but no cattle about today - hooray! Pillar has some thin (surface) cracks on two sides - substantial ground erosion (about 400mm of base exposed) - spider is plugged (tar?). OK views.

Took photo from the roadside as the field had a large number of cows and we didnt want to cause fright as there is no PROW across the field. Gorgeous sunny day, spent the morning at Port Mulgrave collecting about 30kg of fossil ammonites from the beach during the low tide.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 27th November 1947 costing £5.5s.0d. Computed as tertiary station NZ42/T80 in 1948. Recomputed as same in 1986. Flush bracket S4389 was levelled for height in 1953. Last maintained by the OS, 9th June 1981. SITE VISIT: Approached from northwest. Parked in section of old road at NZ803083 by Barton Howl. Note, levelling flush bracket G4808 is at Barton Howl. Mapped RoW starts 100m to the east and leads into open field. Direct route along field edge to top. Pillar in good condition but ground around base eroded by livestock. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces NNE, ~22°. Vented through SW and NW sight holes. Full 360° open outlook.

APPROACHED DIRECTLY ACROSS FIELD TO ROAD. TWO LINES OF FENCE WITH A DEEP DITCH BETWEEN,JUST BEFORE REACHING THE PILLAR. A LONE DEER RAN ACROSS THE FIELDS AS I WALKED UP, AND THEN THREE HARES SEPERATELY TOOK FLIGHT FROM THE HEDGE I WAS NEAR.
