The bridge as a whole is a Grade I listed structure. Started in 1836 , it took 28 years to complete. The bolt could be on top of the tower, or located on the observation level just below the top. I think it highly unlikely it could be seen from the Observatory Tower, approx 320m away, even if it's located on the roof.

Magnificent bridge - I've crossed it many times. I walked up to the Observatory to see if the bolt was visible from there (as suggested by CJO). It's not visible from the ground by the Observatory (not a high enough viewpoint), but may be from the top of the Observatory Tower although I wasn't able to confirm this.

God I hate heights so this was a bit of a challenge crossing the bridge on foot. Amazing views from there just don't look down.

I have walked and driven over this bridge many times but I pick this date as I took a photo that shows the relevant tower. Old Maps 1:2500 1954-1973 shows a triangulation symbol on top of the west tower, SE of the road's centre line.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge in the west of Bristol. There was no access to the top of the towers. While crossing the bridge there was a marvellous view over the city to Dundry Hill and the southern Cotswold Hills on the skyline. The elegant suburb of Clifton is to the east. Returning along the other side of the road the view is down the gorge with Leigh Woods to the west. The bridge and associated toll houses are Grade I listed structures and the sides of the gorge have been designated the Avon Gorge SSSI. There is a faint cut bench mark near the south west corner of the west tower and an even fainter one on the south west corner of the east tower.
