HISTORY: Pillar completed 17th July 1948 costing 12.14s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD74/T17 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in April 1966. SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked NE side of road, north of junction at SD601442, same parking for Fair Snape Fell. Walked roads to SD604438 then RoW network to trig. Pillar leaning forwards possible due to subsidence of foundation, additional concrete to support base added. Also appears to have taken a hit from a farm vehicle. Spider retains original centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces northwest, ~325. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. 315 panoramic outlook with remainder centred on southwest blocked by trees around farm buildings. Also tree adjacent to pillar obstructs smaller portions of panorama.

Beacon Fell Trig Beacon Fell Country Park is one of the oldest in the country, being designated in 1970. It is 10 miles bike ride from Preston and well signposted from the Lancashire Cycle way. The Country Park consists of woodland, moorland and farmland. The summit is 873 feet above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay. On a clear day it is even possible to see the Isle of Man. There is an abundance of wildlife for those who are prepared to be observant. Rabbits and hares are frequent and are easily spotted. Roe deer are a little more elusive, but patience may well be rewarded! Stoats and weasels can be seen running across the road or clambering over the dry stone walls. Handy location to walk dog before long journey home. Area at summit of country park is clear of trees. Pillar looks a bit battered but is sound. A toposcope fitted to top must be very old as a lot of directions are blocked by tree growth. It is shaped to fit nicely onto spider plug is. A plaque was presumably fitted once above FB but only fixing mounting remains. White paint but looks as though it was once bright blue and light green at other times.

Pillar in good condition, except for missing plaque on the side (wonder what it said). Spider substituted by toposcope, which is now getting rather worn and polished, and Plug replaced by plastic insert. Good views to NW, but views in most other directions obstructed by trees. Another one with a paved area round the pillar to counter human erosion in a very popular location.

Ran the rest of the course in torrential rain, ommiting the last legs over the open fell at the top. Managed to finishing changing out of the wet kit as the first chavs of the evening turned up clutching their lagaer andvodka bottles - close! They know when the wardens knock off. Pillar is in good condition, metalwork polished by all the visitors. The top has a toposcope embeded in it. I did not linger to read it.
