Bagging Waypoints 0001 - 0100 is something of a 'side project' in my Trig Point travels so I was especially keen, on a rare sojourn to the S of England, to get this one. The weather was awful, but we got all 5 TPs on the Herstmonceux site, mission accomplished!

Pillar in good condition. Currently has a solar powered GNSS receiver attached to it which is probably related to the nearby Space Geodesy Facility http://sgf.rgo.ac.uk/

Scored a nine for the significance of this being a live GPS station and the very high FB number. Pretty easy to find after walking from the Newton Dome along part of the 1066 Country Walk path for a short distance. Located beside a roadway west of a couple of telescope observatories one of which was being worked on or used by someone at the time.

Parked at the church, Transit Meridian pillar first, then back down the road taking the RoW at TQ 6431 1013. This pillar and the Active Stn next to it are sited on a grassed area in front of the Geodesy building, a little off the RoW, but guys at the telescope didn't seem concerned. Pillar retains an original centre cap, deeply indented lettering.

Bank holiday Medieval festival at castle managed to visit all three trig during visit. This one being the easiest only a few yards from Footpath.

P117. Parked at church and cut through RoW by some derelict buildings. Took a left to visit the trig, passive station and observatory building. Nice to see the three together. Lots of security guards and security booths around here. No idea why this place is so important.

As I approached the trig I was challenged by a member of staff. I explained that I was only taking a photo of the trig and the passive station. Please note that they are just off of the public right of way.

Logged as YOSM 407. TomTom tried to take me to a gated access to the centre but I eventually parked at: N 50° 52.062 E 000° 20.021 and made the short walk to the TP. Interesting location.

Easily accessed just off footpath from church. ASHTECH measuring equipment feature on top of pillar and adjacent to an active station. No paint. Original plug with deeply indented lettering. Concrete base exposed all round. Sightholes closed. OS anti-vandal plaque.

Next to NERC Space Geodesy Facility. Had a chat with a member of staff on the site (I work for NERC). They use the trigpoint for accurate positioning information. They are involved in measuring satellite orbits and need to know their location very accurately. Part of their measuring equipment is installed on top of the pillar.

TP cordoned off on private lawn of observatory buildings. Ashtech instrument on top with cable leading underground to buildings to East. Site deserted on a raw New Years Eve.

Visiting Herstmonceux Sights geocache and spotted this trig just off a bridleway but with plenty of notices telling the public to keep to the path! In good condition.

We parked outside the church and followed the bridle path into the Science Centre. It's just off the path outside one of the observatories. GPS plaque. Metal plug with heavily indented lettering.

We paid £4.50 each to visit the grounds of Herstmonceux Castle in order to bag the 3 trig points here. 2 of them are close to footpaths and fairly accessible (Solar and Herstmonceux) but Transit Meridian is actually in the grounds. The lady in the teashop told us that Solar is still very much in use and that the building with the white domes behind it is where they fire lasers at satellites for GPS purposes. It is well maintained on a patch of green and in the college part of the grounds which are not included on the map/guide which yoiu get when you pay the entrance money and so theoretically out of bounds I presume. The spider has a plug with heavily indented lettering and there is a small ring also in the top of the trig for fastening something down, it also has a GPS plaque.
