A short detour off the Hadrian's Wall path on day 5 of the walk. Dedicated to St Mary, the present church, a listed Grade I building, was built in 1869–70 on the site of a previous medieval church, which had itself been rebuilt in 1811 and extended in 1843. There is a cut benchmark on the W face. If you are going to walk the wall, Sandysike campsite and bunkhouse nearby is highly recommended, it was the best one we stayed in.
