ODP#11: great disappointment! Having done no homework, and based purely on its position on the map, expected great things ... instead found a trig completely engulfed by trees planted to celebrate the Queen's coronation in 1953 (that must have pleased the OS!). You can see the letters if you look along the alignment of the surrounding tree trunks. Marks simply to reflect the stunning views from the surrounding ramparts, in all directions. NE s/hole open, grey plastic centre cap. Otherwise vgc.

The pillar stands in the wooded interior of an Iron Age hillfort on top of the Long Mountain to the east of Welshpool. The trig’s foundations are exposed by about four inches in places. It has FB S4718 and the centre of its spider is plugged by a plastic cap. A bridleway from the minor road to the east links up with the Offa’s Dyke Path which passes around the western rampart of the hillfort. The eastern rampart is rather brambly and covered in gorse in places. It looks out to the Kerry Hills and Corndon Hill in the south; the Stiperstones in the south east and the Wrekin looming out of misty haze in the east. The western rampart closest to the pillar looks over the Severn Valley to Welshpool. The Berwyns are in the distance to the north, the Aran Range to the north west and the faint outline of Plynlimon was in the distance in the west. The trees in the interior of the fort were planted to celebrate the coronation in 1953. They are now reaching maturity. When they are harvested hopefully the trig will survive and regain the panorama that it once possessed.
