Parked at carpark by the old lodge. Quite a few folk about with binoculars for the birds of prey (apparently a golden eagle was spotted!). Then headed up the steep brae onto Creag Irealis.. then worked my way along and up to the trig. Was windy but I got lucky with no showers. Tripoint intact and looking well for age..(although a rebuild as stated by Clochandighter)

Parked in car park by end of public road at NH711180. Followed mapped tracks to NH679176, then random route in near straight line via peat bogs etc. A cylindrical Vanessa pillar occupies the site of what must originally have been a standard Hotine pillar. Although the original pillar had been completed on 14th October 1936 the Vanessa design did not come about until c1958. The date of this rebuild could be much later. Remains and parts from former Hotine including the vertical pipe, two of the four sight pipes, two angle irons and various bits of painted concrete remain nearby. Vanessa in good condition with repairs at ground level. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces 353 (N). Vented through east sight hole with north and south breaking open, bolt photographed. 360 panorama to surrounding Monadhliath Mountains and beyond.

vgc, cylindrical trig, asphalt plug. Surprised to find a Vanessa with such a low number - rebuild? Combined with S7843 and various summits in a 13mi circuit from NW.
