St Mathew’s Church stands amongst the suburban houses of the village of Cainscross in the west of Stroud. There was no flagstaff to be seen and the roof could not be accessed to investigate the presence of a bolt. The large building dates from 1835 and is a Grade B listed church. From the churchyard and neighbouring streets there are glimpses of the tops of Selsley and Rodborough Commons in the south. The wooded slopes of Maiden Hill rise up to the north and Doverow Hill can be seen to the west. There is a cut bench mark on the corner of the tower.
