Argyll....Cold sunny sailing from Lochranza into the otherness of the Kintyre - not many more isolated places than this in the area - the main road more beautiful than the wood and turbine jolted coastal route. A fine craggy hill - rarely found a 50m ascent so lengthy. Down to the lonely lighthouse with views to Rathlin and wintry showered Ireland, Islay and Jura

HISTORY: Pillar completed 15th November 1955 costing 46.17s.3d. Flush bracket S8560 levelled for height in 1955. Computed as secondary triangulation station NS04/3 within the Isle of Arran block during 1956. Last maintained by the OS in September 1978. SITE VISIT: A seven mile drive along a remote steep single track road leads to the Mull of Kintyre. Approached from south. Parked at the high point of this road at NR601080, beside the entrance of the service road to the comms mast. For busier times car parking is provided a further 300m along the road. Climbed up steep heather slope opposite keeping the fence in sight, taking as direct a route to summit as bogs would allow. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces ESE, ~111. Vented through NE sight hole. 360 panorama includes much of the Antrim coast and Rathlin Island. As dusk fell, the lights of Cushendall Ballycastle and the Rathlin Island lighthouse shone brightly.

The walk up from the car was rather harder than I had anticipated and Mrs Stroller was getting a bit anxious about tripping over the heather. Fortunately she forgave me when we made it back safely. Interesting views to N. Ireland.
