Log #200, Munro #2. Left Glasgow super-early, arriving in Arrochar at 7am. I was the first car in the FC car park (1 for the day), and set off around quarter past. Took the recommended route directly up the hillside, following the stream and concrete blocks. One of the attached pictures shows exactly where the track starts. From there, it was a bit of a soggy journey up the stream until reach the larger track. Straight across, and continued following the line of the concrete blocks until leaving the forestry and reaching a grassy plateau. I made a bit of a mistake here, and turned left at the end of the track, instead of just bashing my way upwards (as advised by WH). I ended up on the trail marked on the 1:25k, which was really just some flattened grass until I rejoined the proper trail a little further up. Getting up Creag an Fhithich wasn't too bad, but the trail is pretty hard to discern in places. I was within the cloud by about the 550m mark, and visibility was down to between 50 and 100m. Onwards and upwards to the top of Cruach nam Miseag, with some gigantic boulders and slabs of rock barely visible through the clag, creating a very spooky atmosphere. A crow was cawing from a buttress in front of me, which I was hoping wasn't an omen. Descending a little, I crossed the boggy bit and spotted the route through first gully. The rocks were very slippery, and my poles were basically useless, but I just took it steadily and made it to the Spearhead. From here, I was definitely out of my depth, and what may have been a fairly straightforward scramble kicked off my vertigo something fierce. The thick clag didn't do anything to relax me either. I took it very slowly here, making 100% sure of each footing before moving on. The final scramble up the gully looked much more difficult than it ended up being, and I made the summit in about 3hr 30m. Definitely not a quick ascent! Absolutely no views from the top, and without GPS & compass finding the trig would have been difficult. The cap is missing, but the stone-built trig is in otherwise good condition and doesn't look to have suffered too much. After having my lunch, I descended NW to the bealach - being overtaken on the way someone moving twice as fast as I. We stopped to chat for a while, and he tried to convince me to follow him up Beinn Ime as well. I was tempted, but wasn't convinced about the weather. The clag lifted by the time I got to the bealach though, but I figured I'd had a successful enough day as it was. I passed dozens of people on the way back down the tourist path, obviously en-route to tackle the Cobbler. I'll need to try and pick a quiet day to do it myself. The mindnumbing zig-zags back to the car park were horrible, but the sun was shining by the time I reached the car park. I dipped my toes in Loch Long while I had my lunch. Cracking day.
