Quite a surprise this one! While walking from gate on road I was bitten on ankle by dog, whose owner explained that this was no longer open access ground and was only used by locals to walk their dogs by prior arrangement with the land owner. A sobering experience.

Pulled over at gate on east side of the road about two miles south east of Tregonetha on B3274. Two gates at this spot, one to north east one to east. There was a car coming out of the former. Over gate onto heathland to east and gentle incline up to higher ground. Terrain was like a wet sponge, muddy with clumps of heather. Pillar came into view but higher ground is quite pitted, presumably some sort of old mines. Not a direct line but made it to the top. Reasonable views all around.

Great views today to St Austell, Bodmin and Carnmenellis Granites. This is a little exposure of tourminalised granite, where the feldspar and mica have been chemically changed by tourmaline rich high temperature fluids during the cooling of the original granite batholith. St Austell's granite was kaolinised, where the feldspar is altered to kaolin clay or China clay. The main tourmalinised outcrop is at the village of Roche 3 miles to the south where a large outcrop tower of Roche Rock may be found. Watch out for moorland ponies which graze this area of Public accessed land

Use the stile in the lay-by to get into the access land. I didn't spot it at first as you have to scramble up the bank to see it. It's not ovbious when you first pull up. I originally climbed over a metal gate and then down along the track beside the access land looking for a way in, but ended up walking back to my car as the bank along the track was quite high and I could see barbed wire the other side. Once back at my car I scramble up the bank to see if I could see the trig and only then spotted the stile right in front of me. Land is pitted with suspect looking dips from old mining activity. Walked more or less straight to the trig through and over the gorse - snagging my new woollen socks in the process. Good views in all directions. Using the OS Map app, I walked over to where it says there is an "Old Shaft" but there is nothing to see there. Lots of wild ponies around today.

The trig itself is on a heap that looks like the spoil heap from a bell-pit rather than a prehistoric tumulus.

The pillar stands on the rim of a tumulus on a gorsey tussocky hilltop. It lacks a cap or plug and has FB S7761. The access land of the hill top was reached by climbing over the hedge from the layby next to the bridleway on the minor road to the southwest. A track through the gorse leads towards the trig although a slight detour was needed to avoid some very vocal cattle. Old mine buildings are nearby and old mineral workings may contribute to the unevenness of the ground. The wind turbines of St Breock Downs are to the north; another, more distant ridge can be seen to the northwest; Castle-an-Dinas hill fort lies to the west with more rolling farmland beyond; an old engine house is on the other side of the road to the south with the village of Belowda, the A30 and Tregoss Moor beyond and there is clay pit spoil on the skyline in the southeast. A nearby adit has been designated a SSSI for its mineralogy and the moorland of the site for its fauna and flora.
