Parked in small quarry S of track to Greamachary (NC 8800 3760). Good dirt road to Greamachary, then soggy track to col, and a steepening walk up thereafter. Pilar has the whole top section broken off and lying a short distance away - FB and spider missing. Extensive panoramic views.

Cycled in to Greamachary on a good track. Fog and thick cloud so navigated my way up the southern side by compass. Had one of those eerie sensations something was nearby but dismissed this and kept climbing! Fine summit where I sat for half an hour and had my jam piece. Trig damaged - no sign of metalwork. Returned same way but half way down I watched the fog and mist clear and the landscape slowly reveal itself - very moving. I was reminded of words from Seamus Heaney: 'Useless to think you'll park and capture it more thoroughly. You are neither here nor there....' The summit however never cleared.

Trig split in two, FB gone but spider (with asphalt plug) still present. Great view on a lovely morning (pity about the afternoon... on Creag Mhor...) From ESE, good track to (habitable but unoccupied) Greamachary, reasonable terrain beyond. Descended SE via the HuMP and the P30 then waded the loch (thigh deep at the inflow).

No sign of the pillar on approach, but then I could see the spider in its concrete at the base of the cairn. On the other side it was obvious that the cairn was built on the stump of a snapped off standard pillar, probably due to an excess of weather on what is a very exposed and sharp peak. Good views and fine hillfort.
