It is exactly twenty years and one day since my original visit to Ben Ledi. Most unusual weather. In Stirling it was drizzle, and in nearby Callander it was heavily overcast but not raining. The cloudbase was down at 400m, so I was expecting a very miserable drizzly summit. Imagine my surprise when reaching the summit, at the sight of a clear blue sky and hot sunshine. Only the summit was clear, everything below was in dense mist. Looking over the easterly edge I was able to see my own shadow cast in the fog with a full colour halo centred on my head. My permanent halo is normally invisible. Trig pillar S6956 has not fared so well over the last twenty years. A large structurally damaging looking crack has split the pillar apart at FB height. The spider is plugged with a layer of brown plaster. Left and back sighting holes open. FB faces 82°east according to my compass. S6956 built 19th May 1952, cost £56.17s.11d. Secondary station in Block NN61, Callander. No view due to surrounding cloud, which never lifted. Revisited and photographed 16/09/2006, GRP.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed completed 19th May 1952 costing £56.17s.11d. During 1952 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station NN61/S3 in the Callander block. The flush bracket was levelled for height also in 1952. This trig point was last maintained by the OS on 31st July 2001. The OS Archive comments "base eroded". GRP: Views all round for absolutely miles. I will return in twenty years time, by which time I predict that the handheld GPS receiver will have been invented, and I will be able to afford one of my own. Photography will be digital by then, i.e, no more waiting days for a 35mm roll of film to be developed. Mobile phones will no longer be the size of brick sized toys for yuppies, and we should all be carrying them in our backpacks next century. As for the condition of this well presented trig pillar in twenty years time, long after the OS will have ceased their maintenence programme as planned in 1993 - not good. No sign of that crack on either side of the FB back in 1986, see photo of flush bracket.
