Church of St James, Thornton. Beautiful Grade II listed church, built in 1870. All good with the spire. There is a cut benchmark on the east face of the tower. On the opposite side of Thornton Road are the ruins of the old St James' Church, which the new St James' church replaced. Only the cupola and one wall remain of the old church, which is variously known as the 'Old Bell Chapel' and the 'Bronte Bell Chapel', as Patrick Bronte, the father of the Bronte sisters, was the curate there between 1815 - 1820. During this period, the Bronte family lived at nearby 72-74 Market Street, Thornton, where Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and Branwell Bronte were all born

(2325) Grade II listed St James. A lovely church with a lot of history to it. CBM present on the tower - SE angle E face. And nice to have a wander across the road to see the Grade II listed ruined chapel as well.

St James. Getting very windy. Thornton's associations with the Brontes is much less exploited as compared to Howarth.
