Out for a day's cycling from Church Stretton with the aim of ticking off four pillars in this area. Through gate from lane due East and followed vehicle tracks through hay meadow. Second field much shorter grass. Well worth the climb with pillar on sharp ridge with wide views.

First of the day on a circular cycle from Gobowen train station. I originally tried to access the hill by the marked footpath to the northeast but there was no sign of it at all. Instead, I came up through the cow field from the layby to the north. The cracks on the cementwork seem to be getting worse.

The pillar stands on the end of a grassy hill to the north east of Llanfyllin. It was approached from the west although the mapped footpaths were mostly not apparent on the ground. There is slight cracking to the edge of the top screed. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S4717. The base is exposed by about four inches. The lofty moorland mountains of the Berwyn Range rise up to the north. The Shropshire Plain stretches out to the east with The Wrekin lurking in the mist to the south east. The Breiddens, the Long Mountain and the Kerry Hills are to the south. There is a view up the Vyrnwy Valley to the south west, flanked by tall hills and with some of the Mid Wales Cambrian Mountains in the distance.

Likewise parked to the east near the Plas Gwyn redevelopment but found no trace of the PROW and 2 barbed wire fences en routeplus a small herd of bullocks thankfull on the other side of a fence. Concur on cracks existing but would disagree on the silighly damaged assignment.

Found the access hard, there being no easy way onto the ridge where the pillar was and the farmer has obviously gone out of his way to prevent rustling with some serious fences. However, the view from the top was well worth the effort! The plug is original, with slightly-indented letters. Quite a bit of flaking paint. Sightholes closed. Some cracks appearing around the top surface. Also some slight erosion around base - possibly a sheep-gathering area. Great views over Llansantffried and Powys. Nice spot!
