HISTORY: Pillar completed 27th March 1956 cost not on record. Computed as secondary triangulation station NS04/1 within the Isle of Arran block during 1956. Levelled for height also in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in October 1978. SITE VISIT: Parked by west side of road (C147, formerly A841) at Thundergay. Followed footpaths almost all the way. The first section is mapped and rises to the west corner of Coire Fhionn Lochan. The route continues NNE then clockwise around the top of Meall Bhig until on a southeasterly course. Finally turning SSW to pick up the ridge in the bealach to the north of Beinn Bhreac and the ridge is followed from thereon. Mullach Buidhe. Pillar damaged by extreme weather. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces northwest, ~324. Vented through three sight holes, SW hole still plugged. Full 360 view mostly lost to low cloud at time of visit. Beastly ice shards blasted by very strong easterly wind hence rushed photographs and GPS reading.

Yet another wet and high wind day. Parked roadside at Thudergay taking an easy, clear path to Fhionn Lochain. Then up onto the ridge over Beinn Bhreac to the trig, returning via Beinn Bharrain, a descent to Allt Gobhlach and back to the road at Pirnmill for a couple of miles road walk to the car. No views for most of the walk, but then the clouds suddenly lifted to reveal the magnificent Glen Iorsa and western flanks of Ben Tarsuinn. Pillar is in a sorry state - and no coat of fresh white paint (the least of its worries). Cap is missing and no plug. Large sections of concrete from the lower half of the pillar are missing, but it seems sound enough for the time being.

Lower half of pillar crumbling, but not in imminent danger of falling apart. No cap or plug. Fine summit, great views to snowy peaks far and near, Jura seeming just a stones throw away. After Goat Fell and Holy Island on a lovely sunny day. From W, mapped car park, SE thru trees and dead bracken, narrow ride to forest road, NE then follow wider ride W which becomes a wide boggy stream. Gentle ascent on boggy soggy snow then steep slope avoiding scree/boulder patches. Ridge once finally reached is a delight, short grass, a few outcrops. Bagged the Graham Top of Beinn Bharrain, across a nice rocky top, easy rocky descent, cross a big snow patch en route to the trigged Graham summit. Would be feasible to descend into corrie but nicer to go back same way. Trying to avoid boggy stream on return I got entangled in dense spruce. Not the nicest approach perhaps but it gave me time for Meall Mor (496m HuMP) then a nice meal in the Lochranza Hotel, rounding off an excellent 2 days trigging on Arran.
