(1483) Parked on Midhurst Road and walked down, and then up to the pillar. With hindsight, I could have parked even closer. Pillar in a woeful state. As others have said, it looks more like a neolithic standing stone, than a OS pillar. All metal work long gone, since at least some point in the 90's - the FB is recorded as being S4138, and very little of the original surface now remains. New build housing still in the process of going up, but the temporary fencing is now behind the pillar. A small consolation prize. Given it's state, I guess it'll not survive much longer either way.

Time was tight so I approached from the south on the PROW. The heras fencing is still there, but today the pillar was not behind it so access was very simple, there is even a nearby bench! Damage is extensive this more resembles the inside of a Dalek than a triangulation pillar. No FB, no spider. Nice views over the Don Valley, Loxley Common, Hillsborough, Sheffield centre. The good news is that the pillar still survives, bag this one while you can!

Parked on Langsett Road South in Oughtibridge and headed East along Station Ln / Oughtibridge Ln to the PROW at. Followed this PROW to the rather ramshackle Lower Hurst. Take my advice and avoid this place like the plague - the PROW through here is a total quagmire and I soon found myself shin deep in mud and worse !! Eventually made my way onto Midhurst Rd which I then followed uphill passing the junction with Hagg Hill. A short way further on there is a trod leading up the bank directly to the pillar. The local youths have done a good job on the fencing which allows access to the pillar from behind a bench just to the left. Pillar is in a very sorry state with no FB or spider and the concrete has been attacked. What little of the original surface remains has been 'decorated' with graffiti. Immediate environs are uninspiring with plenty of litter on the ground. Best views are W (over the Don Valley) and NW (along Birley Edge). Those towards Sheffield where shrouded in mist. According to local signage this end of the escarpment is actually called Back Edge.

Parked in a tight space on the lane to south alongside the temporary fencing. I walked up the hill along the footpath and almost walked right past the pillar thinking it was some builders' rubble! A very sad sight indeed. The fencing had either been broken down or blown down just to the north of the pillar so I could quite easily get close up to see the damage. FB, spider and plug are all missing although it is evident the FB would have faced W with an angle iron showing on this side. The top is largely broken away with the centre hole now a home for a plant and some metal spider supports poking out of the concrete. The pillar is barely recognisable as such with so much damage - the only place any external facing exists is on the E and N faces and even they have graffiti on. No GPS position taken.

Of course once you get to the trig all that joy evaporates. Used, abused and probably terminally ill. Theres a development of some sort going on directly behind the trig and the trig would appear to have been initially fenced in as part of that, however the fencing has been blown/pushed down and there doesnt appear to have been too much recent development (this could of course be due to the late April Bank Holidays in 2011).
