HISTORY: This monument to map making was built during April 1940. It was completed on 10th April 1940 for a total cost of 4.12s.9d. In 1945, this triangulation station was computed during the reconnaissance of Secondary Block SD80 (Manchester) as tertiary triangulation station SD80/T9. In 1958 the bench mark on this pillar was valued for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary levelling standards. This marker was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in February 1980. SITE VISIT: Easterly edge of grazing field. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with asphalt. Flush bracket faces south, compass measurement 178. Vented through three sight holes, east facing port remains plugged. GPS reading accurate to 3 metres. Full 360 panoramic view with uninterrupted line of sight to Crow Knowl. Part of a 24 trig stint around the northern outskirts of Manchester.

Rather rushed visit on way to friends birthday celebration dinner in Punjag Tandoori the curry mile. I parked on track just inside where there was a sign saying private, no public right of way, even though a footpath ran through part of the farm. Farmer woman was at gate with her daughter when I returned. A rant ensued.

Started off well, from Cop Road in the south, (a circular route planned), but deteriorated after the baying dogs just before the railway/soon to be tram/bridge. Soggy paths thereafter. Until I broke off into the firm underfoot of an Old Folks Home. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get off the main road and back onto the hillside I found the path through the trees to the north. Doesn't take much nouse to climb through the trees where the pillar can be tresspassed onto fairly easily. Carry on road for more soggy paths. Is the tram ready yet?

After first fence bore off to the top of the hill and the trig so only in sight of the farm for a minute or two. Walked back to the path on the east side of the hill and then continued on path through farmyard. Everything in good order. Good views of the surrounding countryside.
