No need to pay for parking at Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre as there are laybys a few hundred yards to the south. Pretty much followed jonglew's route, going up the soggy firebreak then a short stretch of tussocks before finding the trod that leads all the way to the summit. Cloud was clearing as I got there to reveal the occasional distant view. As usual, ten minutes after I started the descent the cloud completely cleared from the summit.

Up from Clatteringshaws CP over Benniguinea. Tough going but got the trig bagged

Parked on forest road (NX 5716 7669), took the FB opposite for 200m then picked up a trod at NX 57359 76411 which went most of the way - very handy as the ground is very badly tussocked. Pillar sits to one side of summit cairn, seems to have been built without a flush bracket. Centre cap missing, tube not plugged; 2 sight holes open. Extensive panoramic views.

Good views all round, especially view of Chatteringshaws loch. No FB. Limited path, hard going.

From layby at NX 584771. Knocknairling Burn very high, flowing over the wee bridge. Struggled up through forestry then straight up front of hill.

From Clatteringshaws via Benniguinea. Rough, yes, but not unusually so for Galloway. Followed the high line NE to the col then SE. Down via steep slopes to N and overgrown firebreak. Spider gone.

From car park to NE. Walked from NX 591773 where trees felled. Some sparsely spaced young trees.

Cairnsmore or Black Craig of Dee. HISTORY: Pillar completed 26th March 1955 costing £33.11s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NX56/T10 in 1958. Levelled for height value to top of pillar also in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in June 1988. SITE VISIT: Approached from NW. Parked at NX568770 in unmapped short track to south of A712, midway between the two unclassified roads off north side. Battered through challenging forestry to a track parallel with A712 then battered through more forestry to open hill. Followed a near straight line to summit which also proved very challenging due to strong random tussocks of varying depth. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Built without flush bracket. Open sight holes on south (175°) and east faces. Full 360° panorama from top.

from forest track at approx 641754 and then west across the most hard work ground I think I've ever experienced on such a benign looking hill. Spongey deep tussocks where pretty well every step was energy sapping. Beautiful summit when eventually reached with delightful little lochan just to the east

took a bee line from the closest bit of road- some very steep rocky heather(the 3' long stuff) oh what fun, came down by the forestry jcb and followed his self made cutting through the remaining trees
