Along country lane about two and a half miles south west from Nether Stowey. Quite a few ponies about. Where road bends to the south, on the north side of the road is a car park, bit rocky and uneven. From there headed for higher ground. The more popular direction appeared to be further west so hoped I was going in the right direction. As ground began to level spotted pillar on high point. Great views all around. Wonderful sunny afternoon. Spider and cap in place.

Frustratingly, the clouds blocked the sun whilst I was photographing this pillar - the sunlight lit everything up again as I was halfway down the hill. Oh well. Despite the gloomy lighting, this trig enjoys a superb view, and was a joy to bag, being so close to the free car park. It's a popular lump of concrete, too - I had to queue to bag it!

The pillar is sited in an area of upland heath on a summit of the Quantock Hills to the northeast of the village of Crowcombe. The trig was visited on a circular walk from Rams Combe taking in Dead Woman’s Ditch on the return. Some of the tracks were a tad muddy but the route was through some pleasant woodland and across upland open heath with good views. The pillar has the remains of some red paint, especially on top. The ground level has risen to the sighting holes. It lacks a cap or plug and the central tube has been filled with stones. Although not the clearest of days the trig still has impressive views. The wooded combes on the leeward slopes of the hill are to the east. The Quantocks continue northward to the Bristol Channel. Flat Holm, Steep Holm, Brean Down and the feint outline of the Welsh Coast could be seen. To the east Bridgwater and Brent Knoll were on view. The line of the Quantocks continues to the south and to the west the Brendon Hills rise up the other side of the valley and continue towards Exmoor. The area is within The Quantocks SSSI.

There are almost certainly better views at Hurley Beacon about 500m away, although I didn't visit it. Parking is a short distance away at ST151379.
