Parking and route the same as 'Beckroad`. I cycled leaving the bike at the firebreak. Nice freewheel back after the slog over the moorland.

Parked opposite the entrance to Calvert Trust. A long walk in on forest road to bend at ny626826. Could have parked the car at first quarry ny647847. Took the forest ride south onto open moorland. Very tough going over heather, grass clumps and deep rivulets. Fracture in lower third of pillar. Spider top intact. Some fantastic views. Deadwater fell visible to the north. Tricky navigation on return journey negotiating the correct ride to road.

Pillar at Black Knowe Looking east. Fracture visible in lower third.

My second visit, route would have been as before however all the vehicle routes N both at Whitehill and at Paddaburn were locked, so we parked at Andrews Hill and had 4 miles of forestry track trudge added to the route. Having almost completed my second complete round of Northumberland's pillars, I'm certain I'd rather re-do March Head for a third time than have to do this one ever again! From leaving the track by the old quarry the mile and a half of moorland N across 'The Knares' is every bit as tough as the top of March Head, but with additional peat hags. I didn't enjoy my first visit to this one very much, and I can't say I found this visit to be any more enjoyable! Having determined I really wouldn't want to come back to this one again I made a point of returning via Long Sal and the other Currick to the SW of the pillar then over Ox Crags. Gruelling, brutal terrain - Black Knowe is for obsessives and completists only!

500th trig. Parked at The Bower, NY757833. Followed the forest roads all the way to NY649810 where the newly built road finished. First part of the fire break was ok, lots of small saplings and very wet. Second fire break is full of windblown rotten trees. Made my way in between the fire breaks where it was much easier going and the trees spaced far apart. Big gold star goes to Borderer for the extended forest road. 30km round trip.

I have been working on a new forest road which ends at NY 6485 8101 so took the opportunity of a rare visit during the lock down. Followed the break to NY 6437 8089 from where the trig was visible. Tough going through the forest section due to wind blow damage, easier when out in the open. This section is due for clear-felling soon so the next visitor may find the going either easier (or harder). For information there is also another section of felling ongoing and new roads to the north at Wedder Lairs which may be an easier approach as it is nearer the public C200 road at the Calvert Trust.

Parked NY 6266 8253. Took the 500m curving fire break to open moorland, whence a direct line to the pillar. Picked up Humble Hill on the way back for a round trip of under 2 hours in good weather. Pillar has a horizontal fracture line running across the front face above the FB, extending round to the RHS; and a further fracture line on the rear face. An original centre cap is retained, deeply indented lettering; RHS sight hole open. Extensive moorland panorama.

Having driven from the south at Chirnside to Bolts Law (and failed to access the TP) we continued to use the track network and drove to the entrance of Stripe Quarry just south of the TP and walked up over ‘The Knares’. Broke a walking pole on the way up. Discovered I’d forgotten to put SD card in camera when I reached the TP. Cold, miserable weather meant little in the way of views. Got absolutely drenched on trek back to car. Not my best days trigging by a long way :-(

Drove in past the Calvert Trust centre and parked at NY626825. Route in via Story's Gairs firebreaks, Little Humble Hill and Humble Hill. Quite a slog with deep snow over most of the route, the journey taking 2.5 hours for 4 miles. Good distant views from the trig, I could see as far south as Mickle Fell. On the way back headed straight for the firebreak at Story's Gairs.

Despite a couple of inches of snow manged to drive up the track through the Calvert Trust site by Kielder Water to the bend in the track at 626826. Then by foot up the curving forest break and across the very rough snowy moor to the trig. Slow going so round trip from the car took 2.5hrs despite the distance not being great. Sub-zero temps, sun and snow cover made Kielder less oppressive than usual. As has been said before, gets a high score for the effort needed to reach it.

Possible to drive from Calver Trust outdoor centre (to NE) to NY629831. First section to a qaurry at NY647847 is tarmac, from then on its a decent forest track. No gates. Outward from forest chose route to avoid many cloughs marked on map but the going was so hard, returned direct to the break at NY634823, as it couldn't possibly be any worse. This was certainly much quicker but would involve more ascent than the westerly route. The breaks are also rough but easy compared to the fell itself.

When only Rob, Graeme and Aileen have visited a trig, you know its going to be inaccessible. Probably the hardest work I've ever expended to climb a sub 500m hill. Cycled from Calvert Trust car park through fresh snow to firebreak north of trig. Followed break straight up hill (second half not shown on map and headed for Long Sal currick which is visible well before trig appears. Hard work through peat hagscovered in drfiting snow. Trig in decent nick except slight crack. With my dad.

Pillar good apart from horizontal crack above FB. Spider retains OS centre plug with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces 270°, west. Vented through south sight hole. The pillar was completed on 19th March 1953. Later in 1953 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station NY86/18 in the Hexham block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1958. The trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1978. Views over Keilder Forest and to surrounding hills.
