Not as busy as Arthurs Seat last year. Nearest TP to my home. The Edinburgh summit of Blackford Hill is very popular with walkers and is part of a local nature reserve. Trig pillar S3014 was built 12th February 1943 as a town secondary station in Secondary Block NT48 (Edinburgh). Pillar is still in good order. The OS spider cap which had shallow engraved lettering disappeared in the late 1980s and the centre is now open, but filling up with all and sundry. The rear sighting hole is still plugged, the other three are open. The flush bracket is on the south west face of the pillar. A substantial amount of concrete has been poured on the ground around the base of the pillar to control the erosion caused by excessive numbers of visitors. GPS borrowed from Fraser. I have my own now (2003). S3014 is not the only flush bracket associated with Blackford Hill, FB No 10400 is up there too, can you find it? Most visited of all trig points visited by GRP. 14/05/2005: identified 25 other trigged tops from here. Probably many more not so prominent in the view. GRP.

Honest! this is not something I have set up, nor is there any photo trickery here. This temporary pillar lasted less than a fortnight. The location known locally as Midmar Paddock is immediately southwest of Edinburgh's Blackford Hill. When I first set eyes on this, I thought I was imagining things, I seriously thought I had flipped. This green belt land is owned by a well known housebuilding firm, I forget their name. I contacted my local Councillor thinking that this object possibly belonged a surveying company and that the land was again to be under the threat of development. He made enquiries, and replied saying that a sculptor was using it, it would only remain there for a few more days, and in any case the land is green belt and as such is protected from development. The pillar did vanish in a few days. OFF TOPIC, by coincidence, during 2004 this landowner is trying to remove the green belt status from these fields - I wonder why? Councillors, MPs & MSPs successfully fought this off again. No doubt the developer will try again at a later date. All photographs 17/03/2002. GPS measurement NT_25248_70419, 7/03/2004.
