After a number of attempts to explore the fascinating landscape of this trig and hump, had foundered on failing light or weather, wrong timing of various types etc...tonight with fine weather and two hour daylight window after picking up Jamie en route to York, seemed it would finally be good timing and surprisingly Jamie agreed to do it. An impromptu text to Simon Barnard telling him of our plans with under an hour of notice, just in case he might be free and interested to join us, also gelled positively. Great to have your guidance to the finer nooks and crannies of your favourite hill Simon. Excellent to finally visit and whet my appetite for a return visit with more time and full daylight.

An early rise this morning to take the wife to work, dinner prepared and in the slow cooker, dragged the kids out of bed, a quick visit to McDonalds and headed over to the familiar parking place at Windy Hill. As soon as I opened the car door the driving snow blew in, and a gentle reminder to get the kids wrapped up nice and warm. A few minutes later we were all ready, heading down towards the footbridge and over the motorway with the snow blowing horizontal from the East. Remarkably there were so other foot prints in the snow which showed us the best route to take on the footpath and the snow was knee height in some places but waist height for Millie who struggled a bit but didn't moan once, bless her. We followed the path/footprints on the Pennine Way up to the trig point on Blackstone Edge where we stopped for a few summit photographs. I nearly didn't get to touch the trig point as it's located on a large rock which was covered in snow and ice and it took me 3 goes to get up it. A great day out and a bit of an epic for the kids
