Walked from St.Catherine's Hill through mostly pine woodland. Many paths to choose, but fairly easily found - just look for the highest point! Passed earthworks (Iron Age or Mediaeval?) at one point, and a huge concrete reservoir, plus plenty of dog-walkers. The pillar is within the trees of Blackwater Hill; presumably the mound was treeless when the pillar was constructed, so today there are no clear views. There is damage to two corners, the plug is filled in with asphalt, and it looks as if the spider could easily be prised out; future vandalism is likely in this quiet, but frequently visited spot.
