Easy find. 2.5m diagonally to the right after you've crossed the fence on the S side of the road at the twin posts (one with a marker nail in its top). Odd that they put the rivet in such an inconspicuous bit of rock Maybe easier to set up a theodolite on level ground over it?

Drove up on a wonderful clear day with great views, a sunny bank holiday weekend no less. Bolt not in the most inspiring location (previous comments on rubbish still apply)
Nearby bench & benchmark Mrs Z modelling the bench, benchmark on the stone behind. This is on the other side of the road, a short way down the hill from the bolt

I think I found it!!! This being my first Surface Block I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for. Found what I thought it would be at SE 09644 45172 (GPS reading). Parking area not too untidy today only one pile of rotting garden rubbish!

Took a few sweeps to locate it. It didn't help that it was almost buried in rabbit droppings! Plenty of rubbish strewn around the site, but then the whole of the road side up to Whetstone Gate seems to be used as a public rubbish dump. It would have scored higher for scenery but for the refuse!

Those pipe nails sure make it easy to find the surface block. I just followed the fence until I found them then worked from the OS sketch.

Passing by, so another visit. Easy to find, once you know to look for pipe nails on the top of consecutive fence posts. The roadside rubbish has mostly gone but theres a burnt-out car at the boundary gate; a sort of modern variant on a hill-top beacon I suppose.
Whetstone Gate - its still there.

Located this with the help of the OS sketch. Its the first surface block that I've found, and I'm quite unimpressed! I wonder why do people travel all the way up here to dump their rubbish.
surface block Just over the fence - see OS sketch.
A "p/n" The OS sketch refers to "P/N" on fence posts to
help identify the location. Couldn't figure
out what this meant and assumed "position noted";
i.e. not an actual feature but more of an OS
"we know what we mean". Had I known that it
referred to a metal stud in the top of the fence
post then the surface block would have been much easier to bag!.
Still don't know what "P/N' denotes though.
Note added 20 May 2004: its a "pipe nail" - thanks to geobob.
Stone water trough with benchmark A little way down the road from Whetstone Gate;
less significant than the surface block but
more scenic!
