The view from the site includes the Atlantic, the inland moors and numerous mine workings along the coast. Nearby the cliffs are spectacular and the industrial archaeology fascinating and beautiful. The site is within the Aire Point to Carrick Du SSSI for its geology and biology. It also lies inside the West Penwith area of the Cornwall AONB and the St Just Mining District Area of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

Day four of my West Country expedition started well as I actually found somewhere to park in Botallack. That was no mean feat but as it turned out, totally un-necessary. From the end of the road, I followed the track, roughly west and joined the coast path. It was then that I found the National Trust car park at N50° 08.426’ W005° 41.381’ (SW 36463 33228) which I could have easily driven to. In fact, if you avoid the pot-holes, you can drive a good deal further towards the trigpoint. However, it was a lovely morning and I needed to walk off the full English breakfast I’d recently consumed. The pillar is set on top of the cliffs among a lot of industrial ‘archaeology’. There are the remains of old mine workings everywhere. Not the prettiest of locations but the coast has it’s own spectacularly rugged beauty that is well worth a visit. The pillar is easily accessible and in generally good condition, with just a slight chip on one corner and a gaping hole where the centre plug used to be.

This pillar is on one of my fav stretches of the coast path.I offically bagged this (been here lots of times before!) on a walk from Botallack to Pendeen Watch and back to the Queens Arms (Botallack),possibly the best pub for miles. The pillar can be seen from the old engine house on the cliff at Botallack. It sits on the top of the cliff above the Crowns, one of the most photographed workings for miles around. ELV 92m.
