Wearing Hi-vis jacket asked at reception of haulage office if I could visit the trig. Friendly woman found a manger who had no concerns over poining we in the right direction. In grass on S edge of covered concrete reservoir. Some nice old valve gear around but no animals today.

Walked into reception of the large hauliers yard no one about so set off round the back to view the trig.Things were going to plan when a truck driver stuck his oar in and accosted me about visiting the trig.I pleaded with him showing him all the logs and photos on my smartphone citing there had been no access problems in the past.He relented however and allowed me to photo the trig from the fence but refused point blank to let me go through the gates. But a large bull was nearby so perhaps for the best.He had a point though a lot of heavy plant is moving in the yard reversing etc if the drivers don't see you you could have a very nasty accident.

Had some trouble here. Asked at the yard but Saturday afternoon nobody in reception so interrupted a maintenance course in progress upstairs. Chap leading the course said there were bulls in the field so refused access and suggested I should walk down the road. My interruption in the proceeding pleased the course members and gave them a bit of fresh air and an unofficial fag break. Tried the other route but couldn't find the track past the house and no bulls in the field. Will definitely need permission from the yard and as suggested by CURRYSKRIM better in the week not weekend. Continued back to Edwinstowe to complete the 12 mile walk.

I asked at the tractor/haulage yard and was not only granted access but was actually escorted part of the way by a gentleman called Brian Dawson who knew exactly what I was looking for. I would reccommend future visitors to ask for him as he was very helpful. Not many pillars surrounded by three million pounds worth of agricultural machinery. The windmill tower is one of if not the oldest in Debyshire.

Second attempt and got it. Tried track up by 'red house' but lady there said it wasn't accessible though I could have a look through the fence; loads of cows in field and a bloke with tape measure at the reservoir (not marked on map) came over said he worked for water board checking res. level and farmer was about. He showed me where to climb over, so I did. Walking up to the field, farmer saw me and called over, so I went up, explained and asked for permission - he said no problem. Trouble was some of the cows (HUGE)were a bit nosey and came up. Views ok to the west. Second reservoir location for the day, other at Laxton 697 677.

Up north for a works do; Old Man decided he wanted to see Sherwood Forest so took a circular walk from Edwinstowe via this trig point and the Major Oak. Decided not to trespass so (easily) viewed from the road. Major Oak now surrounded by railings and held up by serious ironwork; Old Man struggles to believe I and sisters climbed all over it growing up in the area a long time ago! Last trig before a knee op put me out of action for some while.

On the side of the B6035 near the old windmill. Walked along the access track to the gate but couldn't see any way of getting in and the bungalow next door was unoccupied at the time, so had to give this one up. Explored the possibility of going round the back of the reservoir via the haulage depot on the corner but that also proved fruitless.

Having first visited and photographed this pillar in January 1999, I re-visited it in February 2005 on which occasion a very helpful lady at the house alongside the reservoir entrance allowed me to cross her back garden to climb a simple fence into the reservoir enclosure. However, I noticed a "For Sale" sign in the front garden and so she might not be there next time.
