Drove up to this one, access track not brilliant, but negotiable in a small 2WD car (hire cars seem to be better at this). Pillar is located to one side of a shelter cairn at the hill top. Centre cap missing and tube is unplugged; rear and RHS sight holes open. Some stones moved to get a straight shot of the FB. Extensive views, marred a bit by the adjacent comms site.

I drove up the track from HU 4953 4030 to the masts - just about doable in a car with not too low an undercarriage! Good views out to the mainland from the pillar (slightly hazy beyond that) but most other views from the pillar itself are obscured by the masts or building. Very high winds whistling through the metalwork of the masts and round the small stone shelter by the pillar. FB faces NNW into edge of stone wall; SSE and WSW sightholes open, ENE sighthole plugged, NNW sighthole hidden by wall so not observed; top has plug/cap missing. After bagging the pillar I walked 2.3 miles to Bard Head to bag the bolt (TP10407).

I made my approach from the northeast via West Hill, having just visited Aith Ness trig pillar at the north of the island. There were a couple of workmen busy servicing the transmitters, but apart from them nobody else was about. I had one last look south down the length of the east coast before leaving, because the next time I would see it I'd be on the ferry sailing back home.

Just over a one hour walk from the ferry terminal on tarmac or firm track and getting progressively steeper as you reach the top of the Ward of Bressay and the trig point. Damaged refers to part of the top plate missing - see photograph. Exceptional views, 25 miles South to Sumburgh, West to the island of Foula, North to Yell and East to the island of Noss. Could only have been bettered by clearer visibility.
