Looped visit as my good friend John Spanky Williams actually visited this trig pillar some 49 odd years ago whilst in the army. Information enquiry - Trig point on Pen y Fan Mr Evans Thank you for your enquiry, which has been passed on to me for a response. I can inform you that the Trig point on top of Pen y Fan was removed in 1991, during part of an emergency archaeological excavation of a bronze age burial cairn on the summit. The Trig marker had been concreted to the top of the cairn, presumably by the Ordnance Survey. The excavation was considered necessary, due to severe erosion of the summit caused by the volume of foot traffic at the site. The cairn was disintegrating and there was significant concern that the cairn and any contents would be lost. The Trig was removed from the summit entirely, as the OS no longer required it for navigational or mapping needs. I've trawled and found a couple of pictures that may also be of interest. * CAIRN (Bronze Age - 2350 BC to 701 BC) Description A circular stone cairn situated on the summit of Pen y Fan and on the parish boundary between Cantref and Modrydd. 10 m in diameter, 1.8 m high with a conical profile. A small stone pile added to the top makes the maximum height 1.2 m. The cairn has a pitched slab construction with a curb of edges set slabs on the north west side only. The feature seen today is a reconstruction. Small scale rescue excavations took place in 1978 (Crew 1978) followed by detailed survey and excavation in the early 1990's (Gibson 1997). Excavations revealed a central cist constructed on the old ground surface surrounded by a rough circle of flat stones. A circular mound 13 - 18 m in diameter was built around the central cist over which a substantial layer of sandstone slabs was laid. Larger stones were used to delimit the outre edge of the cairn which originally measured 18 m in diammeter. Subsequently a cut was made into the northern arc of the monument, lined with wood and a small bronze hoard interred prior to backfilling and covering with an irregular cap of stone. Radio Carbon dates suggest a date of construction of between 2037 - 1883 BC (Gibson 1997).

The wind has really picked up though it is a sunny, clear day and as I'm tired and with a big rucsac I'm keeping well back from the edge. Heading for Llwyn-y-Celyn on Cambrian Way.

Just one visit of several - but I know the date of this one. This was on a D of E Introductory weekend, and I managed to forget my boots! Great example for a leader to set.I think this was the only the second time I had been here in the dry (the first time was in 1985!). Some of the kids shown actually carried on doing D of E!

D of E Introductory weekend reached the summit! Photo is a bit blurred, but that is Ian in the red Hat and Lou in the blue fleece. Sheila is wearing the light blue jacket.©dpeberdy
