Walked up from South Brent and briefly took the footpath just below Beara Common, before clambering over an aged wooden farm gate near an old barn (marked on map). Had to negotiate two barbed wire fences, then straight on up to reach an obvious embankment of the once Iron Age fort. Found pillar on the southern side (my side) of the fence; it has its cap with slight lettering and 3 of the sight-holes were open. Just a few yards below the pillar were the apparent remains of a thirteenth century chapel once dedicated to St Michael. It was struck by lightning in 1777 and that was the end of its meaningful existence. Beautiful all round views from the top - South Devon in all its glory. The attractive village of South Brent was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Brenta. This was a lovely little walk with superb views from Brent Hill for relatively little effort.

Parking at the road junction to the NW then along to the ROW, up on to the access land, easy climb up to the summit. Pillar is in good condition and located just the other side of the fence, so a hop over required. Good views today.

A pleasant walk along a permissive path, then a steep undirected climb to the summit of the hill. Stunning views to Torbay in the east and Dartmoor to north and west.

Right on the top of the iron age fort hill; got to be one of the finest views in south Devon, a 360 panorama over the S Hams and right over towards Torbay and Dartmoor with an impressive valley below. Easy to get lost on the way up or down from South Brent though!

Parked at the bottom of the Permissive Path that leads to the NW end of Brent Hill. Follow the path up and then head off to the left where there is a clear path that leads up the hill to a padlocked gate that you can climb over. Then just up to the right to the pillar. We didn’t do this and tried the direct approach through bracken and brambles and arrived at the top covered in cuts! We covered up the barbed wire so I could jump on top and fly the trig! Awesome views!

Initially muddy, then brambley, walk up and around to the trigpoint for wonderful views over farmland and towards Dartmoor. To obtain the flush bracket one has to negotiate over/through the wire fence, so care needed.

I picked the wrong morning for this one, mist, drizzle and wet ferns so I got soaked. My decision to go up the steep slope through the ferns didn't help and I only discovered on going down the somewhat better route around the NE end of the access area. No views to be had at all, totally different the following day as I drove past in sunshine on the A38.

It was indeed a stiff little yomp up. I parked at the bottom of the track to the NW which was delightfully wet and muddy then turned right at the end and made my way up with no problems. The left hand route (which I came down) is only marginally better. The FB is on the wrong side of the summit fence, but that minor inconvenience is worth it for the views. Hollowing, what on earth were you doing up here in the dark on Xmas night???!!!

The view N towards Ryders Hill, I think.
The view W with Widget being camera-shy.

It seemed in pretty good nick to us. We parked at the end of the permissive track to the north-east next to farm buildings (room for one car)and walked up from there. It's quite a pull up to the top and take notice of the notice board to keep to the left as you rise. It would have been good views but the mist came down! Plug with indented lettering.

I picked the wrong night for this pillar, the weather closed in just as I reached the top of the hill (which complimented the failing light). It 'appeared' structurally sound & it has its spider, but looking at the photo's later I saw graffiti scratched onto it (it was too dark at the time to see anything in detail). From what I could see the views over South Devon would be impressive, and the site itself in addition to being a familiar landmark, is quite geologically unusual too when you get up there. The third photo is quite obviously artificially enhanced to bring out the details of the site.

Pillar South Brent and the A38 in the background.
