Parked in car park to north west of the hill, up lane to north of village, car park on west side of lane. Path to Knoll signposted. Pleasant walk, last couple of hundred metres were pretty steep. Gaining points on the way up. Fantastic views all around, quite a clear day, slightly disappointing not to see a triangulation pillar though. Appears to have been converted to a small toposcope. Marks for views but lost points as no longer present. Nearby on slightly higher ground is a Coronation Beacon, pleased to note it is also listed on here. Two logs in one location.

The pillar was sited on the ramparts of an iron age hill fort on top of the hill, its position is now occupied by a rather puny topograph dedicated to the golden jubilee of 2002. Also nearby on the ramparts is a commemorative stone to various royal jubilees and coronations inscribed with the dates of 1887, 1897, 1902, 1911 and 1977. The coronation stone was surveyed as an unlevelled OS tertiary station in 1944. Three large wooden crosses have been erected on the eastern side of the summit. The hilltop was reached by means of the footpath from the church in Brent Knoll village. The view from the top is impressive: the Mendips, Glastonbury Tor, Somerset Levels, Pennard Hill, Polden Hills, Blackdown Hills, Quantocks, the hills of Exmoor, Hinckley Point, Burnham on Sea, Somerset and Glamorgan coastlines, Brean, Flat Holm, Steep Holm, Weston-super-Mare and the Brecon Beacons could be seen. The hill was an island in ancient times. Archaeological evidence of bronze age and roman activity have been found here and the slopes of the hill was the sight of a battle between Saxons and Danes. The scrub on the lower slopes of the summit was full of bird song and was populated by sheep and rabbits.
